Brands Hatch 2 Black Flags :(

Hi all,

So went to Brands Hatch yesterday for the first evening session in the R1 Indy and it came to a grinding halt

I got the first black flag for leaking fuel on left handers out of the breather pipe.

After draining some fuel out I went out again and the same problem was apparent so got black flagged again and that was game over as 2 black flags meant the day is over.

So now I need to sort out the problem before I go again.

So what are my options for the tank:

Get a new baffled one? Fit foam into the existing tank?

It is a carbed R1 engine if it makes any difference

In hindsight was probably a school boy error from me for filling the tank up before arriving due to lack of experience with the car.

Any ideas/suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheers

Chris

Thats a bit harsh when its not down to driving standards. Did they check you had drained some.

Bonus is as above, its cheap easy fix.

Yeah it was a bit harsh but the marshall said that other cars where complaining that their cars were getting covered in fuel.

He did say he sees it all the time on the MK, Tigers etc

I didn't know it was a common problem as it was the first track day in the car.

They didn't check but I had a few coffee cups full of fuel.

Just a bit gutted that I spent £130 for two laps :0

They were great though.

Put the breather outlet on the car centreline, use a small bore brake pipe and zig-zag it, and fit a check valve.

Fit an fia one way valve would be a quick fix, however if you've got that much surge, might want to baffle tank or use the foam

Or best would be do both

Just fit a proper rollover valve which is free-breathing to air but seals up when liquid tries to leak out (as fitted to all production cars). What you have at the moment sounds like it will pour fuel out if you roll the car.

e.g.:

http://www.rallynuts.com/motorsport-fuel-tank-vent-valves/mocal-in-tank-vent-breather-valve.html

There are 'locost' solutions but they are not ideal, such as one-way valves (the fuel tank will pressurise when it gets hot) and wrapping the breather hose a couple of times round the tank (will still leak in a rollover if a syphon starts).

This is probably true but I live 40 mins from Brands so I drove the car there.

Couldn't take/fit any containers etc so it was the only option I had at the time.

School bot error unfortunately. I guess it was on the left side of your tank? Brands is a right hand track.

I have a one way valve.

Shame but the marshals have a point. Petrol can be very greasy.

Track days ARE the best thing since sliced bread, until I get a supercharger that is!

My breather pipe essentailly wraps around the tank across the width of the car. In no situation can petrol pour out whatever way up the car is. On its side or upside down. Seems ideal Locost solution to me.
