MPG?????

Hey i was wondering

How much petrol uses a Locost with bike engine..??

On the highway offcourse,

i will make a Excel sheet wtht he specs

please also write down if you are a carb engined or Injection because that differs a bit i thought..

My blackbird injection does 18mpg if i drive carefully.

I'd get something between 25-30 (I'm doing some mental arithmatic here!) on my Blade, I reckon I could get a lot more milage by slowing down!
Ultimately, it's very very light on petrol compared to anything that could keep up with it up a B-road.

Yeah, I'd agree with Alister. We were regularly achieving 26 mpg on road.

With a long diff, high proile tyres and driven carefully, you can get very good mpg. A friend of mine with a Megablade got nearly 50mpg going to Le Mans a couple of years ago with the car geared for around 150mph (in theory!).
However Im not sure a BEC is the car for you if one of your buying decisions is based on travelling half way across Europe in it, Ive done the Le Mans trip and I wouldnt want to go much further than 2-300 miles in one day TBH, let alone all the way across France from Spain to Holland!

Is it noise? is it a hard top?

Noise and vibration mainly. At cruising speeds you are generally at 7-8k rpm which is much higher than in a car engined car. Even with a helmet and earplugs it still gets to you eventually, and the vibration makes your hands tingle after a while, try holding an angle grinder for half an hour and you'll know what I mean
Also they need much more concentration to drive safely than a normal car, you have to be much more on the lookout for other cars, potholes etc etc. In a normal car you can almost switch off and drive on autopilot (not literally but you know what I mean) but you cant in a BEC so it becomes very tiring in comparison.

Yeah, Chris is right it's a fairly invigourating experience driving a BEC, however after a couple of hours or so you'd like a break. It's nowhere near as 'relaxing' to drive as my Primera SRi (my main car).
I've never done any extended driving in a non-BEC seven, so I don't know if it's the BEC bit or the Seven without a screen that is fatiguing. I suspect that any seven without a windscreen and sidescreens would be tiring, although what Chris says is true as well.
I don't think these cars are grand tourers. More sprinters.

Ok that put me in my place.

But you must be a gluten for punishment for distances like that.
My fingers tingle after about 10mins.
You would probably use a fair bit of oil as well.

I wouldn't dream of taking it to see my sister in the South of France. Last time I took my Jag and averaging about 23 to the gallon wouldnt cost much more but at least I was in comfort.

What you want is a very low final drive (2.8ish) and a V8. Cruise all day at 80mph and 2000rpm.

Alternatively take easy jet! Quicker and probably cheaper

you all should be aware that i have a windscreen...

how is then the noise level???

how would be the noise if i made a think hose to put over the rollbar conected to the windscreen.. etc..

anyone ideas??

Following this thread, I can safely conclude that Malta must be an ideal little island for a BEC. No motorways just little blasts, engine break, roundabout, and blast again. Only one speed camera so far although I must admit that some of the roads are disatrous to say the least!.
And by the way we have rain between December and March, the rest is all dry!!

Temperatures are 10 degrees lowest with 38 degrees in teh middle of August!!

Would I be right in saying that driving a BEC is like driving fast road bike/very fast sports cars were you need to concentrate and focus? Then it must be a damn good way to relax on a weekend and drain out the week's hassle!. I can not wait to get mine on the road

I agree with Chris and Alistair on the fact that your concentration levels are incredibly high when driving BEC. The noise, the smells and everything associated with a bike. You really need to be on your toes when driving. I find I am in dire need of respite after 1 hour of driving.

The simple fact that being so low also presents it own problems... roads that are familiar in a tin-top suddenly have hidden dips in them!

One thing for sure - you sleep very well after a few hours in a BEC. Which is nice!

BTW - 'only' a windscreen will make buffetting worse without sidescreens too... OSIT!

_ will that effect MPG??
_ does any one uses a soft top?
_ how is the noise then??
_ will it effect buffetting(assuming its the sound of 70MPH and 2 windows open in normal car)??
