Oil capacity

Of a 919 Fireblade engine?

Changed the oil earlier, guy behind the counter recons it will take 3.6 litres including oil filter change. so in goes 3 litres and check, none showing, put a little more in, still none in window. Decides theres enough in it to start it and get oil around the filter, so light goes straight out and i continue to run it for about 2 minutes before shutting off to recheck level. still looks like nothing in the window! i ended up using all 4 litres. is this gonna be too much? i have a feeling the oil is too clean and doesnt show up so easily in the glass...

Shall i drain the half a litre out or leave it in for good measure? i have a trackday saturday.

How soon do you check the level after running the engine. It takes a good while for the oil to drain back down and show in the window.

I agree, the sight window is a bit of a git to see sometimes, especially when the oil is clean and you can't get direct light onto the window. Best method I found was a torch and a dentists type mirror on a long arm!

The car is up in the air at the moment, its level on 4 axle stands, so can see the window clearly. if it is overfull should i drain the 0.4 of a litre out? i dont think it will do any damage if i run it over but i'm not up to scratch on bike engines just yet. As i am about to rag it around Llandow on saturday the little extra should be helpfull.

Will run it a little longer tomorrow to see if the oil darkens enough to make a difference in the sight glass.

You dont want to run it over-filled, if the clutch sits in oil when its running, it can struggle to squeeze the oil out from between the plates when re-engaging, and can cause clutch slip. If its up in the air try and drain it out slowly holding the drain plug in or with your finger over the hole, then watch it to see if it comes past the window. Alternatively, just jack up the front end until you see the oil come down past the window, that way you can judge how over-filled it is.
Llandow is good fun. A little tip if you havent driven it before - the chicane at the end of the back straight is A LOT faster than your brain tells you, you cna almost straight line it and brake through it rather than before, so its a good place to catch up on your mates

Ah yes the clutch, dont want it slipping!
Should be able to raise it enough to see if the level comes into view. For the sake of 5 minutes i'll try to take a little out of it, i just remember'd that when i last topped it up it took about 1/2 a litre to go from the bottom of the glass to just below the top so i'll be surprised if i missed it go past.

Wish it had a dipstick.........

Been to Llandow a few times, it is my local track
I saw a Nova go straight on at that chicane and ended up pointing skywards on the bank, can just picture the passengers now sat there looking like they were ready for take off in a space shuttle
Oh and ive managed to straightline the bustop aswell
If the speeds in my old Ibiza were anything to go by i'm expecting 6th limiter on the back straight

Is the fireblade fitted with the Stuart Taylor billet sump? I have one fitted to my ZX9R. When I changed the oil the book said it should have taken 3 litres (I think) but I ended up putting nearer 4 litres in, because of the sumps larger capacity.

If you've got the engine oriented correctly in the chassis then the sight glass will show the correct oil level to ensure that the pickup will pickup oil and that the clutch isn't submerged regardless of the actual amount of oil that went in. I always use the window when refilling my bike mounted blade engine and it hasn't given me a problem in 18k miles.

Yup, always fill to the level rather than the quoted capacity as there's always oil in and around the engine and filter etc that you can't really account for.

Everywhere else, if I mention I have a blade they know I have a bike but here always seems to require further clarification

Dont think it is a billet sump, just looks like the standard one with the drain plug repositioned.

I bought it from someone in the Coventry area.

Today i rechecked the level, it was just showing in the very bottom of the glass, so another 3rd of a litre went in to just at the top of the window
So in total it took approx 4.3 litres so is this a modified sump then?

Not sure, I cant remember the levels around 4L sounds more like it TBH, are you sure the you havent got a 4L rather than 5L can, and have only put in 3.3L?

It was a 4 litre can i bought an extra litre bottle for a top up.
The guy in the motorcycle shop i bought the oil from looked in his book which told him that my engine would take 3.6 litres.
My sump looks like the one on the right, cant understand why the extra oil then!
