Propshafts and sprocket adaptors

Hello,

So I got my an OLD volvo estate prop for use on the locost. Is almost perfect length with centre bearing and sliding joints in the right place BUT...

The mounting flanges are the incorrect diameter and PCD to fit the Ford Diff flange at one end AND my MNR sprocket adaptor at the other...

So I called Bailey Morris and went to my local prop place and I cant swap my yolks for Ford pit ones. Its looking increasingly like a custom expensively scary prop but - anyone any ideas?

What have you used?

(By the way, the prop guys in gateshead lookd totally shocked when I told them that I was gonna put about 170BHP through the sprocket adaptor and little UJ that fits it. Anyone know of any probs at this power?)

Thanks (and sorry its a bits of a long post!)

Geoff

Hi Geoff

Have you looked at MNR's new prop. I know its about £170 but its made from all new components and has the right fittings at both ends.

I guess that would be OK for 170bhp as they are running them on ZX12 engines which do just about that.

Might be cheaper than getting the one you have modified.

If not did you try the place on the Team Valley, just by entrance to Retail World? (I haven't used them but thought they might be OK)

It's Commercial Propshafts on Kingsway - South end of the valley.

A bit of slapstick never hurt anyone.

If they're no good, I can highly recommend Dunning and Fairbank in Leeds - very helpful and a very ggod service!

Also, if the car is predominantly for road use I would recommend a torque tube - I didn't get one at first, but I have now and it's made such a difference! It would have been half the price too if I'd have had it done when the prop shaft was being made..... Hey-ho!

Hey dudes cheers for the replies,

Yeah it was Commercial Propshafts I tried (round the back of Mothercare on the team valley).

They are coming back to me with some suggestions about what to do and hopefully if the price comes in at less than the MNR one (and I can keep my torque tube on my volvo prop) that would be the best thing to do!

Will keep you all posted -they should be calling me tommorow

Sorry - about to Hijack the thread:

Coose - what are DF like in Leeds?

Need a prop this week for my live axle BEC so need a sliding section, cush joint and centre bearing - can they do all this and as well as Bailey Morris?

Cheers,

Pat...

Avoneer - they built my prop shaft as a new unit (live axle with centre bearing and sliding joint) and then added the torque tube at a later date. The service was good and the quality excellent! Give them a bell...

By the way, I have no lnks with them whatsoever - just a happy customer!

Cheers Coose,

Spoke to them and they're gonna sort it for me.

Just got to get the measurements for them.

I take it the "cush" bit is within the front bit between engine and bearing and the sliding bit between bearing and diff.

Cheers,

Pat...

Out of curiosity, Pat, do you mind saying what they've quoted you for the above prop? ( I think Bailey Morris wanted somewhere in the region of £380 for one with torque tube.)

Andy.

My torque tube is in the rear section, just in front of the sliding joint and appears to work beautifully!

I reckon that D&F would charge you less than £300 for a live axle shaft, with centre bearing and torque tube....
