Whilst wer'e on the subject of starting

I can't put it off much longer, I need to try and start my ZX9 for the first time any day now.

Any tips? With a 'normal' engine I would throw some oil over the cams, pour some down the bores, crank it with the plugs out untill it saw oil pressure then put the plugs in and give her a whirl.

However these bike engined scare me...

Should I be aware of any potential nasties or banana skins? How much oil shall I put in? (more than the bike manual says I believe)

Well I'm probably not the best example of a cautious builder! My blade engine hadn't been started for 4 years and had barely been turned over, I just hooked it up with everything it needed, and once I had the wiring right, started in 4 seconds!

But I guess if your particularly worried about potential engine damage you should take steps to prevent it. Looking back I should have at least changed the oil and dented filter!
