Exhaust springs

Gents:

I'm posting this here because I've noticed quite a few of you guys use exhaust systems held together with springs.

I'm going to modify my Westie exhaust manifold this weekend. In the picture below, you can see where the exhaust outlet from the headers meet a yet-to-be-welded conical expansion--which turn bolts to the exhaust can. I need to place an order with a stailess supplier. But before I do, I'm curious if it is a good idea to use a springs to hold the cone to the headers.

My thought is to weld a small straight tube to the cone. On the header side, I'll expand the tube to slip over the header outlet. This can then be held in place with a multiple springs.

My question is, 1.) how mand springs and 2.) is it worth the effort?

In my experience with the springs on my manifold, Id look for another way! Ive tried 3 different types of exhaust spring including the originals that cost nearly £5 a pop and they all end up breaking within a few hundred miles, Im currently running the manifold with 3 out of the original 8 required!
