Buying and selling houses
I just bought another house and am selling the house im in. I was calculating the costs involved, roughly £5300 of which the government take £2450.
The biggest outlay is this Stamp duty WTF is that for, what benefit do i get from paying that. rant over for now.

Stamp duty is just another tax.
The benefit you get is the same as any other tax, the govt has to have money to spend (wisely or stupidly), the only place it gets it is from taxes -
no schools, hospitals, traffic police, army, airforce, navy, parking wardens or civil service if there wasn't any tax...
Not that I enjoyed handing the cash over

Do you pay stamp duty on your main residence if you sell it?

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

The rules are here, including the table of values.

Considering it's customs and excise that collect I'd suggest not trying to avoid it.
