I have bought mine from Jon lee at www.lynxae.co.uk
At £350 quid it is definitely not locost!
But you get a small geared starter which throws out the starter cog and a machined cog that replaces yor standard bike engine output.
You will need to fabricate your own mounting bracket for that aswell!
I am still waiting for the gear though, as he said that the one he had was damaged.
It is a lot lighter than a standard starter and uses less current to turn, but has the same torque as the original. Used on race cars to save the normally smaller battery.
The closest I have seen to the starter is the catering van ford crossflow or a jag xk8 one. Martin

Have a look at the Pell gennisis evo build diary site, they use something like what you are looking for, maybe get tips, inspiration on there.

Or come across to the dark side on the Se7en list... The Pell Genesis bloke (Adrian Moore) posts there, so you might be able to grill him a little bit
Also the Yahoo BEC list also has a fair few people on it who have built reverse mechs for racing BEC cars in the 750MC RGB races.

i used the bendix of a valeo part number.

its was pure luck that it works fine with that bendix, sow i just tigged the bendix to my starter. (only the pinion offcourse)..
