Problems finding neutral

Anyone got any suggestions on the following :-

CBR1000FP

I can sit in the car and select between neutral and 1st no probs. Best I can describe is a thud one way and then a clicky spring the other.

I've compaired this to the engine Ive taken out (CBR1000FJ) - feels exactly the same.

If I go for a spin as soon as I come to a halt - b*ggered if she'll go into neutral.

I've tried with engine running and engine off.

The thud and the clicky sping have gone.

I've tried disconnected the shift lever and manually tugged up and down.

Tried keep pulling away and trying neutral (obviously engine on)

And rocking backwards and forwards in gear (engine off)

Suddenly it all starts to work - doesn't appear to be a sound or hint of anything locating internally back into place.

Once its in Neutral I can sit going up and down selecting N & 1 without any problem again.

The old engine I'd sometime struggle to get neutral but a couple of wiggles sorted it.

This is happening more or less evey time.

Any advice greatly appreciated for Monday!

Cheers,

James.

mine did that constantly, i put it down to a shady gearlink. However, i put up with it because you dont really need neutral.

On bikes it's usually the clutch cable or the clutch dragging itself.

Just make sure the clutch is totally un-engaged when you put your foot down

I'd agree, sounds like clutch drag.

I no longer run Furore Products or Furore Cars Ltd, but would still highly recommend them for Acewell dashes, projector headlights, dominator headlights, indicators, mirrors etc, best prices in the UK! Take a look at http://www.furoreproducts.co.uk/ or find more parts on Ebay, user names furoreltd & furoreproducts, discounts available for LCB users.
Don't forget Stainless Steel Braided brake hoses, made to your exact requirements in any of around 16 colours. http://shop.ebay.co.uk/furoreproducts/m.html?_dmd=1&_ipg=50&_sop=12&_rdc=1

Mate, it sounds a bit like
A) Normal bike gearbox. Neutral can be tricky, easier to select it just before you hit standstill and put your feet down or the car driving equivelant if you know what I mean
B) Bit of clutch drag
C) Bit of a pig!

Bit more info/history

Fitted new engine - clutch had too much travel & pushed outer friction plate off

too much clutch pedel travel
too much clutch pedel travel

Restricted the pedel movement so the outer plate is approx half way out - (no idea what it should be)

adjusted pedel
adjusted pedel

Swapped over, all but the inner friction plates - as old engines where in better condition.

Inner friction plate is different on cbr1000 - the inner plate on the new engine was clearly identifiable, so left that in place.

Upgraded to barnett clutch springs.

There's your prob maybe. The tangs on the last plate should locate into the shallow slots on the outer drum not as you've got it in the stack. HTH.

Sorry to be really dumb here...

All I know is the plates move out in the direction of your arrow, and falls off if its allowed any further travel

There's a chamfered edge (that your arrow is directly on)

Cheers as it would be nice to know how it should be

I may of course be speaking out of my behind but on my blade clutch it didn't work properly when I assembled it as yours is. I can't really see from the photo if yours is the same but the blade outer drum has a defined "slot" where the arrow is for the outer plate to sit in.

look the same layout as blade

Hi Jubal

Dunno?

Just looked the clutch up on www.ronayers.com on the microfiche for CBR1000RR 04-05 and looks the same layout as for my CBR1000

So how did you set yours up?

Mine's a 98 blade. Like I said, the outer drum has a definite slot for the outer plate to sit in. i.e. the outer plate's "tangs" are not in line with all the inner plates. I presume it's to stop it rotating. I'm sure someone who knows what they are doing will comment later when work kicks out.

Ah! - looked closer in detail at the diagrams - the "clutch outer"'s are quite different in how the plates fit in.

Been and looked at Colins clutch this evening - I see what you mean that the outer one should sit in the cut out (Colin hadn't mind!)

Yeah back to drawing board

Probably dig the clutch out again tomorrow and double check everything - Just not sure how far out the last plate should be when its pushed out

sorted....

N'op...... right number of plates...

The center clutch basket was bust,

You could pop the middle out of rest of the center basket casting!

Sourced a spare locally (under a BBQ) and she's now running sweet
