An electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG, abbreviated from the German Elektrokardiogramm) is a graphic produced by an electrocardiograph, which records the
electrical activity of the heart over time. Analysis of the various waves and normal vectors of depolarization and repolarization yields important
diagnostic information.

I would guess it was by your pulse but i would get in contact with a sports shop and they should be able to tell you.
How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

two ways - chest strap sending out a signal every heart beat (very accurate) or via pressing lightly your finger onto a sesor (very unaccurate).
I've got both integrated into different watches, the strap is very good but takes a little getting used to wearing. The finger one has my heart
rate at 40bpm at rest (its 60). not even tried it when exercising.

Heart rate monitors. This should tell you all you need to know.

I am a competitive road racing cyclist and I use a heart rate monitor consisting of a chest strap and mini computer. Most common way to measure HR
and very accurate and easy.
