Blade Gearbox (Problem?)
Hi,
Does anyone have a 92/93 blade engine in thier car? I do and I'm having problems:
I use an electronic gear shifter (see here as to why) and I am having problems downshifting.
There (sometimes) seems to be no 'slack' in the gearbox coming down the gears -changing hear by hand needs a firm press and down it
goes.
Does anyone know of a problem with these 'boxes - better still does anyone know of a fix?
The problem seems to have come on recently and it seems to be worse at town speeds rather than when being thrashed
Thanks
Matthew

Hi Matthew
Could it simply be that your linkage etc needs adjusting? If not, the usual thing that goes on blade boxes is the gear selector forks and/or the
selector drum. the forks can bend if they have a hard life, so making gear changes less than perfect. The selector drum has a channel cut into it that
controls the selection, and this can get damaged. Either way, its a case of splitting the bottom end of the engine and replacing the damaged parts,
not an easy/cheap job, so it might be worth keeping an eye out for a 2nd hand box if that is the problem.
I know I probably sound like a scratched record , but also ask on the Yahoo BEC list as there is loads of people on there with blade experience who
could advise further.

Not really an answer to your question but my 94' box sometimes likes to come un-dogged (if that's a word?) and you can hear the tangs
wizzing past each other.........not nice. It is usually the result of a lazy gearchange by the operator and the solution is to quickly pull it in to
gear, putting your foot on the clutch has no effect!

It could be the oil is getting too hot. I remember an old Kawaski 1000 that did the same when the oil level was low(it used around 1 litre ever 2/300
miles!)
I fitted an oil cooler then and kept the oil level up which seemed to work even after a week of thrashing it around the Isle of Man

Talking of oil, have you changed it recently? If the clutch has been given a hard time ( i remember your post about practicing donuts!) bits of clutch
plate may have contaminated the oil, which wont help gearchanges.

Thanks guys - it'll be a while before i get to look at it now. (just had metalwork removed from my leg )
Talking of oil - i topped it up as a precaution as soon as this started happening and it might have made a slight difference.
Whats the consensus of overfilling when the engine is in a car? My engine has a dipstick rather than a sightglass - does the orientation change when
mounted in a car??
I'll make sure its reading 'max' before i take it out next (few weeks yet)
Any more thoughts appreciated!
Cheers Matthew
P.S. I was practicing donuts - not practicing destroying my car I still have too much respect for the car when driving onehanded - read
"powerturns" for donuts anyway
Cheers
