Choosing a BEC engine

Im trying to decide which bike engine to go for, im running on a budget, so the slightly older R1 engines are quite attractive, given that a decent ZZR1400 is about 2.5K

I can appreciate that the ZZR engine would be amazing but its just too much....

So, how reliable is an 03 R1 in a BEC situation? Is it going to keep falling appart?

The other option is a blackbird engine from a CBR 1100...similar power to the R1, just a bit more torque, would this be ok in a bec?

If I buy a kit from a reputable source with ECU and clocks, would I need anything else to get the engine into the car?

Obviously need a prop and adapter, but are there any other big costs involved with this?

I know you are obviously just at the planning stage at the moment, but try and avoid the 03/04 R1 engine specifically - they are not the best engine's to use in a BEC as they don't "lend" themselves to being in a car or sidecar although they were brilliant in the bike...

The Blackbird is well known for oil starvation probs on no.3 cyl - Avoid!!

Why not go for the new ZX10 engine - more power & torque than the R1 (I think?) & absolutely unburstable.

The budget choice is a pre '95 ZZR1100, no emissions & CAT issues & costs about tuppence

I no longer run Furore Products or Furore Cars Ltd, but would still highly recommend them for Acewell dashes, projector headlights, dominator headlights, indicators, mirrors etc, best prices in the UK! Take a look at http://www.furoreproducts.co.uk/ or find more parts on Ebay, user names furoreltd & furoreproducts, discounts available for LCB users.
Don't forget Stainless Steel Braided brake hoses, made to your exact requirements in any of around 16 colours. http://shop.ebay.co.uk/furoreproducts/m.html?_dmd=1&_ipg=50&_sop=12&_rdc=1

Its the 04/05 to avoid in the R1 in a car.

and the 02/03 5PW (first injected one) is fine.

Just to clear that up as a previous post said 03/04.

Though someone will probably point out there were early or late registrations of both and therefore some crossover...

Funny, I was going to put 03/04/05!

So it was the crossover that I was referring to that it started at!

Thanks for clearing that up Dave.

Busa performance for half the price......... Just make sure you get all the necessary bits and pieces, otherwise it could prove costly.

With the ZX12R engine the ram pipes/trumpets and air intake temp sensor are mounted in the frame and can be quite easily overlooked and forgotten. Also, the clocks, fuel pump, fuel level sender and battery box c/w relays can be used from the bike.
