R1 Engine Changes 01-07

OK, some help would be much appreciated here (I'm a GSXR addict with very little R1 knowledge).
Looked yesterday at a Jedi with an earlier R1 engine on carbs (well, racing flat CRs, but I digress). How much different are the later engines as regards mounting points and dimensions (chain sprocket position / crankcase), interchangeability? Essentially, can anyone give me an idea as to whether I can slot in a later model without resorting to major metalwork.
My GSXR installation (for example) would require me to relocate the differential, mounts, etc., incurring driveshaft length modifications. Although remaining within the chassis rails, the engine mountings would need a complete rejig, adding in the hassle/cost of a new exhaust etc....
Something for the winter, but not mid-season.

Talk to lsdweb on here as he has done a very similar conversion between R1's in a single seater. Basically its a totally different engine requiring a fair bit of chassis modifications to get the engine mounts sorted from his posts on here.

Try a search using his username in the search facility for some of his posts over the past year or so

I did a 00-01 swap to 02-03 in my old Phoenix.

Minor differences between 98-01 mainly electrics and a few gearbox internals.

02-03 change to fuel injection but mechanically very similar. Higher capacity (deeper) oil sump. An extra mount on the cylinder head.

04-06 Complete redesign. Change in dimentions (shorter stroke) higher reving to get the extra power.

07 on is different again but I believe packaging fairly similar.

As Paul said, I went from 2000 to a 2005 and there were huge changes - new mounts, exhaust, loom, cooling, airbox ..........

A guy I compete against (Henryk Koslowski in a Jedi) has just gone from a 2001 to a 2007 engine and there were big changes! I can get you his email address if you want to know more?

Thanks everybody, much appreciated, just what I needed to know. It's not a straight fit for an R1's younger family tree, so that means it's going to be a GSXR replacement operation.
Being in no rush (I'm enjoying competing in the Westfield for 2008), I'll keep looking for a good (sensibly priced) Mk6. Having a few Mistral built GSXR's sitting around does tie me to these units, so it may make too much sense not to ask Mr Corbyn to put me togather a kit package for the winter months.
