r1 airbox
i just fitted my r1 airbox cant afford £100 ish for a sausage filter and when i opened the airbox weather malc knew or not sat a brand new
K&N filter has anyone any concerns over my mods to fit the box re. the opening

Are you going to cover it up, then it would perform as Yamaha intended.

nope, i'm pretty sure yamaha intended air to get into the box!

The air is fed into the centre of the filter through two tubes moulded into the lid of the box. With a big hole like that, the air will get into the
box but not through the filter. Not just air but grit and leaves and water and stones and small children and soil and all sorts of things. You need
to close the hole.
The box will be smaller which will affect the torque curve a bit but you should be OK.

Smart51 I think you are talking about the old carbed airbox. This is the FI motor which has a completely different airbox design. The panel filter
separates the low from the high pressure area and has only been opened up on the "atmosphere" high pressure side thus shouldnt be a
problem.
The hole is larger than it needs to be and thus the air more turbulent in the high pressure zone but certainly no worse than with a foam filter.
I used 3" ducting from the nose on my phoenix to give lower induction temps. On the RR this gave a couple of ponies even though the main reason
was to reduce noise.
