Fitting fireblade calipers (pics)

I'm fed up of the crappy brakes on my Autograss racer so i've invested in a shiny pair of NISSIN s of a blade.

Question is how best to mount them on my trailing arms, the current calipers (fiesta?) are mounted thus:

So my plan is to remove the old calipers and make up spacers as above (red bits) and lugs to get them somewhere near.

Then plumb them in and fit them over the discs whilst an assistant holds the brakes on hence clamping the calipers on square.

Then just tack and then weld with brake pressure still applied to stop them from warping and moving the alignment.

Any better methods people have used or any problems you can see with this method?

Also, anyone know what thread the fittings are on the blade calipers as I only have the bare calipers??

personally i dont think they are man enough for the job.
finger pressure on a lightweight bike and small master cylinder compared to leg pressure on a lot heavier 4 wheeler could be a recipe for disaster, try at your own peril!!
cheers and good luck

They are tried and tested on Autograss cars, i've spoken to many people who have them fitted on the rears and fronts of Class 9's and 10's and are very happy with them.

They are a 4 pot caliper.

Couldn't be any worse than they are currently anyway.

They'll be fine and that's about the only way you'll do it. The ideal would be if one of the chassis builders did an adaptor plate that fitted behind the bearing carrier but the reality is that everyone is using different types of bike calipers. There's a lot of the radial mount types being used now. How thick are your discs as I think the usual is to machine down a pair of Escort 1100 front discs. Get someone who knows what they are doing to do this for you.

They've already been machined, I had a check today and the calipers fit quite nicely around the disc.

I just need to sort out the fittings now as I have a quick look and an M10x1.0 starts off in them but not very far, looking on the net most NISSIN stuff seems to be M10x1.25 so i may have to source a banjo and bolt in that size to try.

I can't remember the thread but I got some last year from a place advertising bike bits. I just asked if they had any banjo bolts for blade front calipers and they stocked some nice stainless ones. Have your calipers got pads in? I was amazed how expensive they are for such small pads!

is there something wrong with you current calipers as in the first piccy it looks like the pads are not in line which wouldnt be good for braking

They do look a bit off in the picture, i'm not sure what's going on there. They were fine last weekend when I had them out to check, the problem is the other side really where the lugs had got bent and the pads weren't contacting across the full area and so the harder you pressed it was just flexing the bracket.

I straightened the brackets, but the pads had worn on an angle so the problem was worse! Hence I've got fed up and decided to start again.

That's why i'm anxious to get these ones right when I mount them up.

Richard: These came with some brand new EBC HH pads in. I looked at the price of pads before I got them (same money as buying the calipers second hand!)

It looks like I have got M10 x 1.0 Banjo Bolts on the current calipers and the fireblade ones want an M10 x 1.25. If I get the x 1.25 bolts will the Banjos I currently have fit?

My reasoning being that the M10 internal sizing should be the same as they're not on the threaded bit so the thread pitch should be irrelevant ?

(only Banjos I can find are £6.50 each and i'll have to re-do my end fittings to suit too possibly Looking for the LO-COST solution as ever )

Yep, the hole in the banjo should be the same. The only other slight complication with banjo bolts is that they normally come in two lengths. Might be easier to get two of each if you are doing it mail order. The price difference will be far less than additional postage if you get the wrong ones.

Well spotted it looks like the the caliper brackets are not true to the disk ie the pads are being presented at a slight angle to the disc surface --- that gives a very spongey pedal.
