You are 23 now and are just starting your build, you might be 25 by the time you finish it. Who did you try already? Get a copy of Which Kit or Kit Car and look through the ones in there. Will they insure you for a car engined kit or is it just because it's a bike engine? I am an old git but when I rang for insurance from Adrian Flux they only asked the engine capacity.

yours, Pete.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

insurance

Providing you have no "black marks" ie, convictions or claims, you wouldn't have problems getting insurance on a car engined kit, I had quote from footman james on thursday for 2.0 pinto engined
locost, fully comp, £408.95 I am 22 and don't have any no claims.

Pretty good considering the last time I got a quote for my 93 1.4 astra it was £700.

How far along with your build are you chris, I have front uprights and grp body panels, chassis next

I have only tried footman James so far, the only good news is when I get to 25, only 22 months away it should cost no more than 300.

I am right at the start of my build, starting with the chassis (waiting for the steel to be delivered, as i can not fit a 6m lengths into my focus)

Might well be 22 months by the time it's on the road then!

Good luck with the build.

Maybe you haven't a clean license?

My neighbour just got her license back after D&D... almost the same for her Ford KA!!!

checkered would describe it quite well! only one claim, by a foolish moped rider, plus 6 points, a ban, a retest and convictions for c&a, insurance and license.

Having said that, most of it came from one incident in my youth, plus speeding at 105. I've now got to nearly 2 years no claims, plus 25 in september, so its all looking good.

touch wood...

Try Sureterm, they insured me last year when I was 24 - about £400 fully comp, including track day cover (£400 excess on the road £1500 on the track).
I did have 5 years no claims bonus with a clean license and no claims but I still thought that was pretty good.

Jay,
Have you made enquiries for insuring a locost yet? Just a word of warning I got a quote from Adrian Flux, £380 (4 years no claims, age 33, garaged, 5k miles pa) - not too bad, but was told that they only insure certain BT (N. Ireland) postcodes. I suspect they wouldn't touch a Belast postcode at all.
Good Luck

why is NI so bad for insurance? is it a high theft-risk area? if so i wouldnt bother with theft insurance and would just garage it well.

I believe there are a couple of reasons it's so bad - firstly there's less competition, and secondly, I think the accident rate is pretty high, which doesn't just mean lots of pay outs for wrecked cars, but also loads of injury claims which really pushes the price up. I suspect the accident rate has more to do with the road layouts than driving quality.

I think NI has a higher rate of people sueing over accidents, making claims for injuries etc, but it is pretty outrageous. If you see any of the insurance adds on TV they usually have a line of small print at the bottom say "Does not apply to N. Ireland". Winds me up something rotten.

However bad it is in NI, just remember its 10 times worse in the Republic

Not entirely correct :-)
I just moved up north to Dungannon from Dublin (Dunboyne) and my insurance has went from 760 Euros (520 Sterling) to 580 Sterling (842 Euros) in the north for a 1.6 Nissan Primera SRi. That's aged 33, 4 years no claims etc. I think you are right, however, in that younger drivers get higher premiums in the Republic.
