Keen to see if anyone has experience with the 16valve mk2 gti engine. I am Contemplating fitting to a type 9 gearbox but don't wish to re-invent the wheel!!
Any info MUCH appreciated

Why would you want to....


The VAG 1.8T engine as fitted to the Mk5 golf, audi a3, passat, TT, ibiza etc.. Is an excelent engine

Pretty tunable.... and has a nice shiny turbo...

They are pretty cheap...

And you can get an ali bell housing to link it to the type9 (or was it MT75) eitherway... that is possible...and although its a resonably heavy motor.... its rock solid and pretty powerfull!

Never heard of one used.

As a big Mk2 Golf fan I'd have remembered it if I'd seen one.

One of the big problems is the height of the engine- it's very tall so you may have trouble getting it under the bonnet.

Our resident MK2 expert is martyn_16v , might be worth talking to him in case he knows of any.

For the money id also grab a 1.8t 20v unit. My leons fitted with a 225bhp version and it flies when in the rev range. Cost is coming down on these as tuners are starting to fit 2.0t mk5 golf platform and V6 lumps(R32/R36). Im pretty sure a few elises have been uprated with these engines over the toyota and rover units so in a kit car it would be rapid although the 16v may be simpler but James has mentioned they are a rather tall block engine

Audi 80 16v has a 2litre version already north/south

Call it an ignorant way of looking at it but the mk2 gti engine does standard 135-140 bhp and depending on how abusive you are with the clutch, the car still does mid 7 seconds 0-60 in the standard shell which is not to bad. It also has what the mk2 rally escort had, a sound of raw engine when driven hard. The 1600 twincam toyota offers the same. I appreciate it will never compare to the modern turbo units but then again cost is an issue....(2nd bun in the oven..) but thanks for the comments. I will have to invetigate the height issue and 80's engine.....

Personally I'd rather see a Mk2 Golf on the road than a Locost with a Mk2 Golf engine. You don't see many older cars like that these days

Ninehigh and Farway, I have to agree with you both
Mk1 golf's and Scirocco's just aren't around anymore. The Mk2 versions af both are like rocking horse poo!
The engines are wicked for what they are - had 3 Scirocco's in varying states of tune
They are tall engines but are quite compact and canted over. If you've got the engine and could get a cost effective gearbox to go with it then why not!

Oh yeah if you got the engine without the Golf then do it. But if you have to rip it out of the Golf then restore the old thing, for the sake of decency!
