Hi,
I am just trying to gather as much info as possible to aid in our choices of what to build (We only have a basic mechanical knowledge - we will be
after lots of advice along the way )
Theoretical question: If I had an MK Indy already built using a Ford Sierra Engine and Gearbox (presume type 9), and at a later date we wanted to
replace the engine with a Red Top for example. Would we need to replace the engine AND gearbox or can the type 9 gearbox be kept and some
mounting/housing adapter "type thing" be used.
Also, would this only be applicable to a type 9 gearbox or are there a multitude of engine / gearbox variations?
THANKS in advance,

you could change to an omega gearbox, but you can get a VX bellhousing for the type 9 from quite a few places now

If you want to change to a red top or duratec for example you could keep the type 9 and buy a new bellhousing.
The mt 75 box has a cast in bellhousing, adapter plates may or may not be available to fit.
More info will no doubt be allong in a bit.

Hi, yes keep the type 9, lots of options available. You need to mess around with the release bearing/fork and the friction plate but its all quite
straightforward. Bellhousings cost around £150.
Get in touch if you have any specific red top enquiries, happy to help.
Great engine by the way.
Hi,
Many thanks for the above replies. Much appreciated (as always).

I should also add that the type 9 box itself has lots of aftemarket options for different ratios and HD boxes (although some arn't very
locost)
so its definatly a good choice if your not sure exactly what engine you'll use/ swap to later
just to fully answer your question, the type 9 is very flexible and can be adapted to suit a wide range of engines (redtop, all the zetec variants,
duratec, cosworth V6, pinto, ford DOHC, C20LET just off the top of my head).
No other gearbox is this versatile although generally you have more than one option with any engine you decide to fit. The C20XE (redtop) can use the
type 9, T5, manta or omega boxes for example.
Hi,
Thanks again for the further details - I can assure you I am taking the info in and it is very much appreciated.
