Ok Ive came to the conclusion that there aint many running mkII escorts about, especially here in glasgow. So i was wondering if all i need off an escort to make my car to the book size is the back axel, diff and prop ??? Then if i got all that could i use a sierra gearbox (theres tonnes of them) and whatever ford engine i can get cheap (maybe one from a MKIII escort)???

cheers

Hi Rab
Im not far from you.. i'm in Livingston
From what i know if you want to follow book the min you will need is a back axle and steering rack from a mk2
A prop shaft would be nice but you can still overcome this.
I know where a steering rack is in a scrappies in Falkirk area if that helps.
I am no expert but i hope this helps.

Escort steering boxes can be bought new, if all else fails... not hugely expensive, either.

It's the axle that's the main concern, and your choice is Escort (to be same as the book), or Capri (a little wider, which some prefer), or early Cortina up to MkV (even wider, but still OK.

Yes you can get MKIII engine cheap but from what I've heard they're good for two things- using as anchors or melting down to build other stuff!

I've heard that there was the odd MKIII with Crossflow engine but I couldn't tell you how to identify one from afar!

Have you tried searching e-bay for a MKII someone just posted they'd seen several?

Good Luck,

James

Also try loot - I've found several in there over the last couple of weeks.

So all i really need is the back axle and the steering rack.. ok ill have to go on a scrappy search. Im not really wanting to make the car any wider (if i could id even consider making it smaller), but if it comes to it and all i can get hold of is a capri or cortina then what kinda mods would the chassis need??

Im actually not wanting a whole donor just the parts i need..

I still think it is possible to get MKll escort parts and MK4/5 cortina hubs,it does take a bit of searching though.
I got my 1st escort by placing add in local newsagents up to a mile around my house, and motor accessory shops too.
I got a cal within two weeks, someone had one up their drive and was using it as a shed.
