Hi all, quite a lengthy one here - but I'll try and explain the best I can.

Starting my build in the early days I had an original donor car of which I had the Engine, Gearbox and Axle from - no V5 etc as I believe the remainder of the shell was scrapped (i took the parts out from the scrap yard). I was then later given an engine and gearbox from my dads uncle who had an old Ghia Mk2 - I now have the VIN and Reg from this but my question is - am I able to retain any of the reg from these cars.. am I able to get a copy of the V5?

Let me know if I've missed any vital info.

I presume you mean when you register your kit. In that case no, if you qualify you will get an age related number, a number with the same year prefix but not the original number.

If the number is sentimental then you will need to transfer it but you need an mot for that.

Hi Coozer - yes when I register. I don't mind getting an age related plate but wondered if I'd need the V5 for this?

Also I know you need 3 points. If I go for the 1600 - I only have the engine and gearbox... does this mean Q plate?

You need two major components from one donor to get an age related plate; you will need the V5. Engine and gearbox are fine.

In theory if the chassis is self-built, rather than from a 'specialist kit manufacturer', then you are only eligible for a Q-plate. In reality, however, I believe many people have got age-related on a self-build.

They not to know.. just put all the donor stuff down as off the V5.

Getting a copy of the V5 costs £25. You need to fill in a V62

You won't be able to get a V5 if the vehicle has been registered as scrapped (and you mustn't scrap it before registering the kit - put it on SORN instead).

Thanks all - presume both cars have been scrapped by now.

I know the 1300 has as I ripped the parts out from the scrap yard.

The 1600 was my dad's uncle so presume it was scrapped - is there anyway to tell - the DVLA checker just comes up with (Unlicensed) I would've thought scrapped, N/A or SORN would've appeared.

I would just apply for the logbook and see if it is still available. If so then all of your donor parts could have come from it, so you will have no problem getting an age related plate but will not get the original reg as a new age related one will be issued when you register the car.
