Steering column removal
pdm - 23/4/10 at 07:11 AM

Morning all,

Well as I inch ever closer to getting my donor stripped for my GKD, I'm stuck again.

It's steering column this time - I have undone everything but the splined end isn't coming free of the lower column. It's clamped with a nut/bolt/clamp and I've removed the nut/bolt and tried to gently prise the clamp a bit.

Any ideas for what to try next please ?

thanks
Paul

have you completely removed the bolt?
if you have, sometimes they can sort of rust together a tiny bit. plent of penetrating oil/wd40 and lots of pulling really

I was afraid of that !

I've removed the bolt and there is no give at all so it's probably rusted on. I was just a bit worried about breaking it with too much pulling !

Get some heat on it if safe to do so and then a few taps with trusty tool #1 (hammer) - to hopefully break it free

Can you gently tap a wedge of some sort [the end of a chisel] in between the flanges of the clamp to open it up? I've always had to do this to seperate my column from the rack.

i had the same problem, what i did was a big flat head screwdriver in the joint to split it a bit. And then gently tap the other end to loosen it. Dont bash to hard though, the UJ is made of ally so is quite soft, ive dented it a bit with hammering.

I would not worry the column is not made of butter....
Just think how much force goes through it when you steer.

I removed my column from the rack with a hammer
no harm done
