How much discovery to keep?
rincewind23 - 4/5/10 at 07:46 PM

Hi all,
Another one started! I've got a 1990 Landrover Discovery as donor, primarily for the v8 engine. I'm using the McSorley 442 plans for the frame, and I'm comfortable with the fabrication part, and I know a *little* about the engine bit from working on cars as a teenager.

My big question is (for the time being!), apart from the engine (and obvious related bits - coil, alternator etc.), what should I be using and what should I be getting from a different donor? For example, I thought the gearbox would be too heavy but from some research it looks like a lot of rv8-based sports cars use the same gearbox as the landy.

Any pointers or advice much appreciated - I don't want to sell any bits I find out I need to buy back later

Cheers,
KEv.

The obvious little bits:

Wiring, light bulbs, fuses/relays, nuts/bolts! Gauges potentially (although that might be a step too far).

Radiator/fan/washer bottle/cooling and heater hoses, throttle cable, exhaust clamps

I think some kits use the LT77 gearbox, so if that's what you've got and it fits, by all means stick it in. It's not a brilliant thing, but will work!

Don't think you'll be able to make much use of the axles!

Lol no, I think the axles would only be of any use in a monster truck-type racer

I thought the radiator woulld be a bit big - was hoping to use a smaller one.

My Fury has the radiator from a Bedford van. If the radiator fits, use it.

diffs in the axels , axel casings and half shaft will all be worth a bit of money not much about £80 a diff to a LR nut. especially the Offroad boys . Stick them in the local paper. also Radaiator if not leaking will b e worth a bit.

Shell and chassis won't be worth much execpt for weight of scrap.

Go on, stick both axles and the transfer box underneath

Isn't the fuel pump one with an integral swirl pot thing - keep that and the level transmitter if keeping the instruments.
Wipers? Battery/earth leads?

I doubt that you could use much of the big bits though I am using a Range Rover hand brake and intermediate steering shaft in mine! The gearbox you have will also have transfer box I am not sure if you can remove transfer box and still have a useable output. All the mechanics have a resale value as have exterior panels if straight, lights, interior axels suspension bits etc. You should make a profit if you break it! try Ebay there is a lot of Range Rover / Disco stuff on their and it sells well.

How much do you want for both axles?

I'm looking for a pair for my 4x4 project...
