Quite a tall engine the 2.0 Gti.....

Although nothing is impossible in KC world I'm sure there's many easier candidates to choose from? Then the conversion to RWD when many Fords are easier using common components.

It's also not a particularly fast or sporty engine either.

one more think guys does the haynes book worth it to start building the car or should i look for a work shop manual? cheers

I would think you need all the information you can get so buy the Haynes manual, a workshop manual which covers your running gear and anything else you can lay your hands on to start with

Cheers

Eh! Which GTi are we talking about?

The Mk3 2.0GTi 8v (115bhp in a heavy car) was slow and underpowered. The Mk3 GTi 16v (150bhp and not much heavier) was a good effort but not a very common engine.

The MK4 NA 2.0 GTi is/was dire. Awful engine for a GTi. Again about 115 to 120 Bhp but in a much heavier car again from the Mk3. So so little that can be done to this engine for gains too - it's pretty stuck at that 120bhp.

I've assumed (perhaps wrongly?) that the OP wasn't talking about the Mk5 and Mk6 GTi engines - quite an expensive donor!

The 1.8T is still a cracking engine and loads of tuning potential. Value for money and potential - I'd rate that as the best VW engine. IMHO of course!
