Today i had a look at a potential donor. It was a 1.6 on a J plate with a OHC engine. The transmission code under the bonet said E. Anyone know if this is a type 9 as i thought the code should be N?

On a J plate, the 1.6 was probably a CVH, in which case I think it would be a MT gearbox. Easy to tell from inside, reverse is right and down, a type9 is left and up.

I got my box (type 9) out of an 1800 sierra L and the code on the plate is an F.

The CVH is 1.8 in rear wheel drive. The 1.6CVH is used in Escorts and Orions in FWD form. Type N box is used for Sierras,strictly speaking the type 9 has a longer input shaft and is used in V6 cars. There were 4 speed boxes used in Sierras as well, it may have one of these.

Pete, the last 1.6 sierras were all CVH, injected with a cat, I am fairly sure they used a MT75

Nephew has a 'J' reg 1.8 cvh that's the newest one I've seen. Not strictly true as his dad had a 'K' 2.0 twin cam with an MT75. If the later CVH were produced at the same time they would most likely have used the same. Weren't later 4WD boxes MT75 with a bit added on as well ?.

My donor was a 92 j plate. Came with a 1.6 Pinto and a Type 9. Looks like Henry just used whatever was lying around.

As Mark says, easy way is to look at the shift pattern.
