Just get another hundred quid zetec and go for it.......Wrong time of the year to be changing engines.....

We get little enough time to drive in the Scottish summer with out having a car off the road

mookaloid - 27/4/12 at 06:47 PM

scooby engine no good - too wide

austin man - 27/4/12 at 07:02 PM

Zetecs are usually bomb proof if they have been serviced well.

What sort of problems is the zetec giving you?

They normally dead straight as long as you use the correct oil.

My Nissan is toast too, so I am going to pull it this weekend and have a look. Maybe within a month, or two, someone from the local sports car club will come over to let me know what the hell I am supposed to look for. So a rebuild is in the cards, and if it all goes haywire, another JDM. I don't expect to drive much this year.

So I feel your pain. If I were you, I'd go for the new Zetec and be done with it. In the end it is probably cheapest. We can't get them here, and don't have Type 9's either.

Is it the wiring that's the issue
Or the cooling system.......
swapping to another type of engine is just going to bring more grief

mad4x4 - 28/4/12 at 11:18 AM

It's an emissions problem

Had it since day zero,

Day zero : to much HC & CO2
Year 1 : change to bike carbs - to much HC & CO2
Year 3 : Changed to Mega squirt injection ..... to much HC & CO2

last week fixed an inlet air leak & fitted wide band lamdba -

Yesterday : MOT (2nd this year) failed on emmission again ...... Still in the 4k Range. to much HC & CO2

Ready to throw matches at the thing........ so pissed off.

Have you checked the thermostat? The MAF dirty?

I have no idea, but I read that somewhere. Can't hurt!

Err don;t have a MAF (air flow meter) but have water temp, air temp, air press, throttle pos, wide band lamdba...

thermostat would cause/stop over heating issues but it is emissions i'm having probs with

Whats your AFR reading?

Mine failed on emissions last time (twice the limit), as a result of the base map running rich etc. Its only now that i have the ASE and WUE settings working correctly with the injector PW to get an AFR of between 12-14 on idle.

The problem could also be static timing. If the EX valves are opening too early, youll get unburnt fuel in the exhaust, causing a rich reading on the AFR and high HC.

ETA: I would check the static timing to TDC, and compression test to check valve seat integrity.

No idea, but a haynes manual should tell you how to replace the timing belt, which will reset the timing.
