MGB donor
mgreddog - 20/11/02 at 10:56 PM

has any one got any experience or knowledge of using MGB as a donor car. I have a very terminal (rust bucket) MGB and would love to turn it into a locost type car . All help appreciated ... Ade

Similar queries crop up from time to time. To use the MGB components is possible but the parts are heavy and old-fashioned, especially the engine, gearbox and rear axle
I would stongly recommend selling the MGB remains and buying an Escort or maybe a Sierra.

Ade,
I have URLs and info at home. If you post your e-mail address. I'll get it sent off to you.

There are a few guys out there that have completed very nice ones too. I am at the very early stage of build, but it appears you can use 90% of the B to build your 7.

A major part of building one of these babies for me is the individuality that you put into it, the B components are more period and I should be able to keep the old reg no.

More likely you will get an age related plate

Even though I've owned the donor for 5 years?

My understanding is that you can only keep an existing registration if the car has been rebodied, such as some VW based cars. In every other case the car will receive a different registration either age related or Q.
I might be wrong

The missus'll be upset. I'll need to do some checking.

Do you know if there is still a loop hole for projects that were started pre sva (ie No test!)

Cheers,
Ian

depends on how long ago you re boddied your B if you dont tell anyone i wont

It's been on a SORN for 4 years!

So has anyone taken advantage of the loophole recently.

If so how does it work???

Ta,

Try taking the roof off the MGB and send the log book away to change the body type to roadster or convertible. You might be lucky enough to get the log book back with the relevant changes made. If you are unlucky, the local VRO might send an inspector out to check it (no charge). If he is happy with the conversion (usually is) he will tell DVLA to issue the revised log book. You will have to do a reasonably tidy job of removing the roof and putting some strength back into the body but it should be worth it. You can explain that you are part way through the rebuild and there is still work to be done on the rest of the body. If it works out okay you will now have an MGB roadster/convertible book, you can build the locost, use the MGB book and you have record of a DVLA inspection. It is not technically correct, but I have used this method when building hot-rods in the past and have got away with it.

Ian,

I have just had a look at your website and I see that you have taken the roof off already. Weld in some box section, tidy up the boot area and send the book away. You will probably get it back okay.

Duncan.

On second thoughts, don't do any work. Send the book away with the relevant changes and wait to see what happens. If they want to inspect it, do the minimum amount of work to make it look reasonable.

Many thanks for the quick response to my questions. Unfortunately and dare I say it here but I have a major dislike for anything Ford (having worked for them in UK and Detroit for a number of years). So in short the Escort wont do it for me. Therefore being an MG nutcase I will pursue a build using my £100 rust bucket cos if I dont then the wife will call in the scrap guys when I am not around.

I do intend to modify the front & rear suspension to coil over shocks and new front upper wishbones (MG owners club type mods).
