hi everyone,
i have just turned 17 and want to be driving as soon as possible!
I have been offered a car already however it is an F reg diesel pug 205. I'm sure you will agree that i could be seen in better cars.
the idea has struck me however that surely i could put a 1.2 petrol 205 engine in and start my modifications from there.
is this worth doing and also where do i start looking for a new engine?
Well, it's got to be better than questions about 'pluming'
John
well its getting closer to the mark really.
youre only gonna get 1 piece of advice here..... scrap the 205 and build a locost. im only 19 and ive found that the insurance will be (for a young
driver) more or less the same for a 1.2 205 as with a 1.6 locost.
Adum, this forum is primarily for the discusion of building and running the model of sports car known as locost, if you want to ask these questions,
firstly there are probably more suitable forums out there, but I would think that the "anything else" category would be most suitable.
I would suspect that the petrol engine would require a different gearbox and possibly different engine mounts and exhaust manifold, it might not fit
at all and even if it does there could be a load of other things you need. So in short, is it worth doing? No.
Another thing that's definately worth considering is insurance, chances are you're gonna be absolutely skrewed for insurance if you say "well, it was
a diesel, but now I've changed the engine". You wouldn't be able to just call it a 205 1.2. Also you would almost definately have to reregister it
because on the V5 it would have that it was a Diesel.
For all the effort and expense, you'd be better off just selling your diesel and buying a 1.2. Hell, don't expect that to be fast by any stretch of
the imagination, infact, I'd be tempted to stay with the diesel, it might sound like a tractor but the fuel economy will be better, and the street
cred difference is so marginal, it's hardly worth worrying about.
Engine transplants (barring straight capacity swaps) are almost soley used to increase the power of a car above what is available from the factory,
for the most part they're not cheap and they're extremely time consuming.
Why not just buy a 205 GTI which comes with a 1.6 or 1.9 and are pretty damn nippy to boot. I've heard of good examples going for around £1000,
although insurance may well be prohibitive at your age. They can however show Saxos a thing or two, the 1.6 can beat a VTR no probs and the 1.9 would
probably make short work of a VTS.

i agree with kingr on the point that theres no point transplanting, go sell the diesel and buy a 1.3 205. make some money on the diesel and spend a
little more ona good 1.3.
on the point about reregistering, no you wont have to. with the v5 you got when you bought the car....... you did get a v5 right???........... you
write the new engine no' in the correspnding section. you send off the v5 to the dvla and they send you back the updated version with the new engine
no'. no change in reg.
as for insurance with the transplant..... most insurers will charge you at the insurance group of the car the donor engine came from.............. not
the same with kit cars. thats specialist insurance.
cheers
Hmmmm, so, (Kingr's brain starts whiring) if only I could find a car with a nice high power output and low insurance group.....
Kingr
And then you'd have to change fuel systems and probably a bit of wiring.
And you would have to register the the change of fuel on the Registration document.
And then the insurance would go up Cos its then a modified vehicle.
Besides, the 1.9 oil burner engined Pug, would probably wee all over the 1.2 petrol equivalent. In fact, IIRC the Turbo D 205 was as quick 0-60 as the 1.6 GTi......
there is and never was a 1.2 peugeot engine! its the TU1 1124cc engine you will be after! however your going to need to change all fuel lines etc to do the swap id scrap the pug and get a Locost its what im doing! if you are intent on the Puegeot tho try the post '88 1.4 XS 85bhp as standard and only grp 7 insurance and despite what anybody tells you they are fast as f**k
