I know where I can get a mk1 cortina rear axle, will it do or do I have to have an escort one,

You can use any live axle that you wish, from Escort,Cortina to Capri. Wouldn't know what the ratio is, but the ideal seems to be around 3.75.

Don't fret I'm only bitter because I had to change the one in my Capri axle, but anythings possible.
