I have damaged one of the rear brake callipers off a 4x4 sierra and think that the best way to overcome the problem will be to find a breaker yard and buy a replacement. The main problem I have is that I don't know what side the calliper is from! They have several marking on but only one appears handed. The calliper I need has a number 0658 / 4 and the calliper that is good has a number 0659 / 4. Any ideas what side is what?

You could bin them both and fit some lighter ones from a late VAG car, golf boro etc.

What if any mods need to be done to get VAG calipers to fit sierra.

the '0658' and '0659' are the last four digits of the casting part number.

The lowest part number is always the left hand caliper (I work for the remnants of Girling).

I was a bit of a dildo really as I attempted to remove the piston to replace the seals before reading the Haynes manual and got it wrong! I basically pulled the piston out with screwdrivers and mole grips with the calliper clamped into my vice. Now the piston was tired before hand so I wasn't too worried about that. However, in clamping the calliper I crushed the handbrake leaver against the body and the bushes that it sits in have been damaged. I think I could get the bits to replace them but I don't have the tools to compress the spring and to buy the tool is probably more than it is worth. Hence the replacement from a breakers yard. The daft thing is that as soon as I saw the threaded shaft in the calliper I realised I’d goofed; having looked at the manual I stripped the other side in minutes!

you can compress the spring with a 2-leg puller and a socket.

I tried some VAG ones on the back of my car as my mates dad works for Lucas and every so often gets a pair off the line for testing but never uses them. He gave me one of his own to try and it seemed to fit except the disc didnt seem to sit far enough back in the caliper so only 75% of the pad would be touching it. I found out that the sierra cossy rear discs where 10/20mm bigger diameter (i cant remember), but i worked out they would be spot on as they arnt any thicker. Saying this I didnt have any pads so it might be ok with standard sapphire discs.

He hasnt been able to get any since, so i've still got the sierra ones on for now. but would love a nice shiny pair of VAG ones.
