I am thinking about using a Sierra XR4x4 as a donor car for the Locost project I am planning to start in the summer, good or bad idea? (they seem to be easy to come across compared to a mk3 escort as per the book) Would I have to alter the chassis design? Has anyone already done this and has plans?

and there are a bunch of other problems that i dont know about but are bound to exist

I used one as my donor, only useful bits were complete rear axle, prop shaft and steering column and wheels. Cost £100 so worth it for the LSD alone.

3 hours to strip on the trailer then got the breaker to lift off the rest as a complete lump.

There is no value in the engine or gearbox so do not expect to offset the purchase cost.

What would be the best sierra to use then?

a 2.0 base model, L, probably GL at most.

it wants to have manual rack, pinto engine, carburettor and a drum braked rear.

lsd and disks are overkill, although i'm sure someone will be along to witter and preach about their supposed benefits.

A mate is half way through his build using an XR4x4. Hes keeping the 4x4 and hes using IRS. Its wider and taller. Should be good when its done but not to be taken on without alot of consideration first.

I used xr4 x 4 as doner, including the engine, (see my photo archive), and the only advise I would give now is don't. Far simpler to go the Pinto route, or as some on here advocate use a bike engine, (thats if you don't mind bleeding at the ears, every time you go out in it), biased? who me! never.
