I'm just wondering how the handbrake on an all round disc braked sierra works. Some actuate the hydraulics and some (like my pug 406) actually have discs+drums on the rear and use a conventional cable for the handbrake

Hi, The disk braked sierra rear calipers have a handbrake connection which i'm sure activates the hydraulic piston. A normal cable is attached to the lever and when applied moves the piston. Not entirely sure thou until if dismantled mine.

yea, operates the piston but mechanically not hydraulically. Theres a cam mechanism of sorts built into a pin behind the piston, which compresses the piston forward against the action of a stack of belleville washers. A coarse screw thread then compensates the retraction to prevent it retracting too far, hence why you have to wind the pistons back on these calipers. (and others like various citroen ones and Subaru MV pickup front ones)
