Drive shaft - hub refurbishment question
Slater - 26/5/06 at 01:32 PM

More questions.....Here is one of my drive shafts with hub (the hub nuts are allready loose). How would you normally refurbish this?

Just remove rust and paint or should I replace the rubber gaitors as well? The gaitors look OK but the steel clamp rings look pretty corroded. Can you get replacement gaitors/clamps? Where from?

Do I need to do anything to the actual joints underneath the gaitors?

Should I take the hubs apart?

They look like the shafts I have used, If they are you will never get the gaitors off, the metal surround bit is crimped on. I ended up getting recon shafts. If they are not perished or split I would leave well alone.

I would cut the gaitors off if neccessary and then clean everything up with a flap wheel, two coats of Smoothrite and new gaitors. Anything less would be a compromise and you want it to look like new don't you?

Use the proven electrolysis route and the shafts clean up great.
Just ordered some flexi boots to put on mine so I dont have to take it to bits!
