What Donor II the return!
oldbillkane - 6/5/03 at 09:00 PM

I'm sure this question has asked as many times as the number of kit cars alive today.........however.......here we go again! On the whole, generally speaking, given all the 'pros and cons' etc. etc.........purely relating to a Locost or son of locost......what would be an ideal combination of motor/box/axle/steering blah blah blah. Say around 1800cc non injection, non turbo........Would a 'B' Series MGB be a reasonable donor?. Lots of questions in one there. Please help.
thanks

I used to own a Dutton Phaeton fitted with an MGB 1.8 engine and gearbox (escort rear axle, triumph herald front end) and the main problem with it was the bellhousing & starter motor were a lot wider than the original Ford gearbox, it meant that the footwells were so small the pedals were positioned too close together for my size 9's.

If you took account of that when buiilding the chassis you should be ok, the engine block looks about the same size as the Pinto.

If you had a rusty old MGB there shouldn't be anything to stop you using the whole car as a donor. Unless the front hubs won't fit book wishbones?

If you're building a Locost the ideal combination is a MKII escort with Cortina uprights.
Makes the whole build a lot quicker and easier!
