1.6 Capri a good donor?
fuzzy!! - 9/10/06 at 08:02 PM

Hi - bit of a newbie on this (any locost) forum so apologies for any of the typical questions.

Is a MK1 1.6 capri any good as a donor? per RC's std build?

Thx

Should be good, BUT you'll still need a pair of Cortina uprights and an Escort steering rack. The axle / engine (crossflow) / gearbox / steering column / instruments and master cylinder should al be useable as they're similar to Escort bits.
The axle is arguably better than the Escort as its's a couple of inches wider.
If it's the right money, BUY IT.

Oh, and welcome to the madhouse

Couldn't agree more really.

Didn't they use modified Capri or Mk2 Escort front struts for their uprights? It might be easier than trying to find Cortina ones.

Yes, and they still do a live axle car - not sure how Capri rear fits into that though - although they do wide rear arches.

capri is very good donor if you can fabricate stuff yourself.

As Pete? said, Sylva use cut down escort struts, and 1600 capri ones will do just fine too. Cut the strut tubes down, slash cut the stump so you can get in with a spanner then weld a boss in that takes the transit balljoint (not unlike the sierra upright adaptors, but welded into the cut off strut tube.

You can use the engine, box, axle and strut bodies, plus you can use the ends off the prop to get one made to length, and you can use the steering rack and column, both are good, plus you can also use the dash etc too.

Very good donor indeed I would say!

(PS remember the axle is bigger, you'll need to be looking at a " +4 " build or bits designed for sierra track width, look for "Mc sorley" plans etc on here )

and the 1600 engine will be a pinto, not crosflow.....

unless its a mk 1 capri?

Back part of capri prophaft with gearbox end and a new hardy spicer is the right length for a type 9 to Capri axle if you extend wheelbase by 1". i did this by making heavier trailing arm bracket and moving the pivot point for the trailing arm back 1". I got capri axle and sierra Pinto and type 9 for mine. I also bought the Raldes cheap quickrack rather than try and get a standard Escort one. I would have thought you could work with the Capri rack particularly if you go for wider wishbones also the steering column and downshaft would work with this set up though you probably need to extend it somewhere!
