So my rusty old truck is going in for its first carburetor tuning since I bought it.
The Fuel Pump and Aux. Accel. Pump were holed through, and leaking fuel all over the engine bay and into the vacuum lines respectively.
Going to have the ignition timed and the carburetor mixture and idle tuned.
I don't have a timing light, and I know dick about carburetor tuning, so I'd rather trust this to the pros. The shop has 60s and 70s era
hot rods all over the place, so I think they can do a little 2-barrel pickup.
Even without being properly tuned, it hauls firewood like a champ. I think it'll make a fine donor.
Has anyone on here gone the 2WD Hilux drivetrain donor route? And what are your thoughts on using the original rear axle? Are car-sized diffs
available for these? I think it's an 8 inch diff, but it might be 7 or 7.5 inch. *shrug*
pickups are not all that popular over here, so I'd be surprised if anyone knew much about them.
As for the diff, use whatever you like. You will need to get a prop made so get one done with a toyota truck gearbox coupling on one end and your
chosen diff flange on the other.
Yeah, the truck diff is a bit low (4.1:1 I believe), so 1st gear would be largely useless.
I'll investigate the diff and see if I can buy one with a different ratio. If I can't get a higher ratio, then I'll swap the axle out
before I get it too attached.
At the shop, they checked the ignition timing (which was fine), but didn't want to work on the carb because they had other concerns about it
probably needing a rebuild.
I'll do some more tinkering this weekend...
