I'm trying to get all my info sorted about donor cars ect for my future BEC. The XR4x4 is the ideal but would the 4x4 estate have the rear discs
and LSD like the xr4? I've seen a few estates at more atractive prices.

To the best of my knowledge the estate is pretty much the same except for the rear wishbone and shock absorber arrangement.
I broke a 4x4 estate for donor parts and all the 4x4s have an lsd and discs on the back. You are a bit limited on donor parts though as you cannot
use the gearbox (but could flog it) The front uprights are different . If it has abs you cannot use the master cylinder. The steering link is not the
one you want as it will have power steering. Hope this helps.

Just a note, you CAN use the 4x4 gearbox, all you need is the aluminium tail housing from a normal type 9 box-remove the transfer box tail housing and
replace with standard one-thats all it takes to convert from four wheel derive to 2 wheel drive!

^^^ Thats fine if it's got a type 9, but if fitted with the MT75 type its a no go, as the gearbox is basicaly one piece. Ray

Ah good good, i'm building a BEC so i have no need for the gearbox. As for the front uprights i can get over that.. can they still be used?
The good thing about this is that i'm looking for a car before the build starts. If i can find a car with an MOT and tax i can use this for my
run about along with my motorbike aswell as untill the build starts. I don't fancy using a 2.9 xr4x4 for the 40 mile run to work and back. The 2L
estate would be much better.
Mine was a 2.8 V6 xr4x4 and these are type 9 boxes,
Must be the 2.9 v6 that have the mt boxes.
2.8 v6 4x4 gearboxes can defo be converted as thats what i have done!!
Not sure what the 2.0 4x4 run though.

Ah, no Chippy don't even go there!! It's taken me long enough to decide on a BEC and i've gone through just about every variable
possible... now i'm debating again!
What would power and acceleration/ top speed be compaired to the 2.9v6 as to say an R1. Decisions,decisions??!!
Thinking about it work is a 30 mile round trip and i have a 600 bandit for nicer days.
If you get a 2 litre XR4x4/4x4 estate it definately has an MT75. And being for a 4-pot it's the same as a cossie one and therefore sellable to
cossie types complete with cossie tax. I got 100 for mine (and only paid 80 for the 2 litre xr4x4 in the first place).
A 2 litre also has 3.92 diffs as opposed to the 3.62 ones all other 4x4s have. This may well be undesirable for a BEC which tens to need low ratios.
However i'll take your 3.92 front diff off you as a spare!

Oh i never knew the XR4x4 came in 2l, thanks for that. I saw one for sale but thought the bloke had listed it wrong or it was a bit suspect.... top man.

haha, they're still out there!! I was watching a load of 4x4 sierras on ebay.. XRs, estates and all sorts. A 2.9 GLS 4x4 with MOT in ok condition didn't sell and the starting bid was 1p. Ha, i wasn't realy ready to buy at the moment and it was in surry or essex but worth it for 1p.
