Insure tin top on chassis number - import
martyn1137 - 16/10/13 at 06:51 PM

My daughters partner has just been given a car which is currently on a French registration. It was though previously a UK supplied and registered car. Its been bought back into the UK with the intention of re-registering it here, but he appears to have come up against a short term insurance issue.

Apparently insurers will not cover it under the French registration and suggest he will need to insure it under the chassis number, but that though would appear to be mighty expensive with quotes today ranging from £450 to £900 per month. Car is maybe worth £1000.

Does anyone have any experience, knowledge or contact suggestions please?

Adrian Flux and 2gether insurance have both insured imported vehicles for me on chassis numbers. I don't know about short term cover but I guess you could ask them?

It was Adrian Flux who quoted £900 per month I believe. I really can't see why an insurer should consider this a very high risk?

Keep it off road until it's correctly registered?

Unfortunately not an option. He needs to use it.

Also not an option as to register the car in the uk it has to have insurance to get the road tax when you apply to register the car,

A real pain,

I insured my Celica GTfour import from Japan on the Chassis number when i imported it to the uk in 2008, initially it had no reg and the japanese dont do vin numbers!

I used admiral, seemed to work fine, as soon as it was registered and i had my plate, i changed the chassis number to the reg.
