For those amongst us that like to tinker with electronics I saw this kit in a CPC flyer and thought it may be useful as extra protection in the ignition circuit.

It comes with two cards and has a latching output relay or can have, not got one myself yet but plan to for the price and then to have a play.

Like the idea of a credit card or key card system as a bit more protection.

I've just ordered one of those!!
I'm hoping to use it to switch my main relay.

Well it says it can switch 3 amps so pulling in a relay is ideal. At least I am not barking mad!

That a locost option I've seen similar ideas with an induction loop fitted below the seat pad so that the driver has to be sitting in the seat with the "key" on his person for the car to be able to start.
Do you need a separate kit to write the info to the cards, or are they already linked to the transmitter?

I've just noticed that it says easy addition and removal of cards, however it's done it must be part of the kit.

Looking like you would also need to buy the 125KHz loop antenna separately.

Not sure how useful this is for full system immobilisation in it's current form; you get the option of momentary(timed) operation or toggled output.

The timed option might be useful just to immobilise the starter circuit, e.g. you have to start the car within x seconds of putting the RFID card near the antenna, but for main relay control you'd want the RFID to activate the relay only, and then you'd probably want some way of manually deactivating it (e.g. hold button in for several seconds).

I will be using some other RFID system for when I start my build (someday soon I hope :/) since I have a bunch of those left over from my senior design project back in college (also did something with car and RFIDs)

I thought about using same method as MikeRJ mentioned, or a more simple on and off (indicated by some led light) with a swipe of the card or something... iono, I still got some time to work it through along with all my random microcontrollers and crap sitting around

This is cheaper, and the output is set for as long as the token is within range, i.e. for as long as your sat in your seat (if the reader is under it)

Just thought I would add an update.

Got my kit today from CPC put it together and it works well.

you do not need to get a separate coil, there is one in the kit of parts it is a PCB coil so rigid construction.

The relay timer is settable in seconds from 1 second to 240 seconds, if you try and set for longer then this it becomes a swipe for on and another swipe to turn off. So guess it could be used to provide a on time to start the car or a locked on to switch power to all circuits. Then disable when you leave.

I still have to box and figure how to fit into the car to add that extra bit of protection.

Scudderfish, good find, I have asked a question on how much of a kit it is, such as do I have to assemble it as surface mount components.

It is a completed kit so should be very good, may even get one for myself even though I have the other as well.
