Hi All,
As above really...
A Ferrari 430 came down the road I work on giving it absolute beans. Ignoring the fact that it's only 40 limits and he was probably closer to
140, it did sound awesome when going for it. And just started me thinkin as to which car I could with a genuinely minuscule budget that would be
entertaining to drive fast.
It would have to be a compromise I'm afraid... (doesn't everything nowadays!)
1. 4 seats
2. Not shocking on fuel (when not driving like a lunatic)
3. £1000-1500 as above, as I won't have a budget for a new car for ages...
4. Probably a host of other things that I'd need to compromise on having a 2 year I'd!
5. But I do only have to drive 8 miles to work...
6. Erm that's all I can think of right now!
So what would you guys pick?
The only thing that came to my mind is a mk4 golf gti or seat Leon cupra etc (trying to keep it as modern as possible for the money as I won't be
able afford to maintain a car that was going to go wrong every month...
Thanks in advance, for your suggestions!
Steve

subaru imprezza not everyones cup of tea but cheap fast family friendly and strong
eta just one problem finding a good unmolested one in budget
[Edited on 17/4/12 by afj]
Leon Cupras at that sort of money will be a high miler, but you might find a good one, and they are reliable enough, silly cheap to tune to high power
levels. Fun to drive as well. They do average about 30mpg
You could get a mk1 Mitsy GTO, which are also great fun, sound nice too with the twin turbo V6. Mine averaged about 25mpg. You wont get much quicker
for the money though, ~6.5sec to 60 in stock form. 4WD too. Only 2 doors, but 4 seat, get 2 kids in the back easy.

Ooo, it could be like a competition for a motoring mag where you have to buy or build a car for under £1000 and see which is the fastest.....

Keep an eye on "Shed of the Week" on pistonheads. Seat Leon 20vt this week.
Fiat Coupe Turbo, back seats aren't too bad. Timing belt is expensive to change so writes them off.

Eh-up Steve.
Either 328i (as already mentioned) or an early E36 325i both will cost <£1000 and put a huge smile on your face.
or a Pug 306 GTi-6, this is a genuinely one of the greatest hot hatches ever and surprisingly fast car. Watching S2000/Boxter/200sx drivers bouncing
up and down in there seats as you out drag them down the back straight at Donnington is one of life great pleasures.
Also you can paint it like this:

I think T66 sold a 300bhp 9-3 for around that figure not long ago.
of you wait and look carefully, a few skyline R33 gts-t come up for £1500 sometimes. yes they may be knackered, but its still a skyline! and thats
good enough for me

I'm tuning a 9-5 that I got off here a couple of weeks back and with a 3" downpipe I'm knocking up and a few map tweaks should see 280hp for half your budget Steve . It nearly goes round corners and is stuffed full of toys .
If you're keeping it as a Saab Froggy I've got an Aero 'Cobra' intake pipe in the garage that I never got round to fitting - that
ones still got the lpt one on as I recall - the Aero ones flow quite a lot better/more.....and as it has an Aero Turbo....! - £35 posted to Stoke if

Sorry for the hijack Steve
Can't go too mad with it as its now the wife's second car as she runs a pov spec diesel polo during the week . The t7 management seems quite
straight forward so just going to fatten up the midrange as its very smooth at the moment . I wouldn't want to push the tdo4 past 1.2 bar and
it's not even hitting 0.9 yet with the current map.
I'm useless at driving fwd cars but with the map sorted to give the big wodge of torque if will be a nice tub to waft round in. Build quality
seems pretty good as everything works inside including the split climate system once I gassed it up .
Plenty of enthusiast owned 9-5s around for a grand .

All this talk of cheap fast(ish) motors got me thinking....
Found a really nice 9-5 HOT near me for £1700.... Then I checked the insurance..... £900 TPFT
Buggery insurance spoiling all my fun!
also +1 for the saab.

True, had to mention it though
You can have my Fiat Coupe for well under your budget 0-60 in 6.2 seconds, 0-100 in 14.5 seconds. Significantly quicker than a Leon Cupra R above
60 mph.
I've done ~50k miles in it with no problems (though plenty of preventative maintenance) and I get between 27 and 33mpg depending on how far into
licence losing territory you want to go.

This is highly ironic coming from me, but I recommend a Subaru, at least if you lived around here. There are thousands of them in my neck of the woods. Head gaskets go apparently. 4wd. I ice raced one this year a bit. Handled amazingly, much like a less fancy Audi. Really.
FTO GPX
200hp (From the factory but i imagine a bit less now)
Enough seats
FTO is cheap to insure aswell and I know a few people that have had them, two of them have sold and bought back the same car.

The thing with those cheaper Skoda's like the VRS's.
They are all actually DEARER than the equivelant VAG cars now like Golf GTI's/A3's/Cupra's etc...
Must be that everyone on ebay has the same idea...
Well, that and the fact that the A3 and Golf is much more common...
[Edited on 19/4/12 by Steve Hignett]
not sure what you would get for that kind of money, but performance comes at a price . Fuel is one
Well isn't this convenient: Shed of the Week!
Toyota celica 190bhp model, 35+mpg, 4 seats, £1.5k will get you one, 2k gets a half decent one(i'm on the search for myself). Need I mention 8500rpm?
Serioursly, XJR6, 322bhp standard and bombproof engine and running gear!

What are people's thoughts re. a Renault Clio 172/182???
I'm surprised by them not being mentioned, am I completely off the mark with this one?
I don't know anything about them apart from two fella's from here (who can drive) had one (each) as track cars and loved them...
I was just thiniking that they are a bit more modern (for the money in question) but that they can still go round corners? Or so I thought?
Granted they won't be fast, but they won't be dog slow, or are they?
People#s opinions are really, really welcome on this one, as I've been ebay searching and it appears that they are in the price range... So
what's wrong with them? (apart from being French, obviously)
Cheers again...

As a side note, if you can up the budget to 2k you'd get a lot more choice and cars in better condition so maybe saving a few £££ in the medium term too?

It wasn't so much the sound as it was the "everything".
However, the overriding factor was the "ragging it" bit to be honest.
It's the same reason I was happy on my Honda CBR600RR, rather than the R1 that was offered to me at the time.
That's the reason I was thinking cheap and light Clio 182 or 172...
It's the most modern raggable car I could think of.
Don't really want to go down the realms of the older VTEC's etc.
Hmmm???
Curve ball then, 1998 honda prelude 2.2 vti?

I did read it - if you read my posts above, my wife will not let us have a Subaru.
I showed her that one and she didn't even answer, just looked at me blankly.
To be fair, it made me want to buy it just to pee her off
Naah, I still think the Clio is top of the pile - it's just whether I could get a 182 for that money, or whether I could get a 172 with all the
extras like air con etc...
I had a clio 172
And it is a good driver car. And can return 40+ mpg
But it is french, and does suffer from the rattles e.t.c.
I got fed up with doing a 150 mile commute in mine, and swapped back to a wrx.
That's just it - I'll be going from a bunch of VAG cars to a french car, and I'm cure that I too will be bothered by the poorer build
quality.
Having said that, I only have a <10 mile commute and it is twisty country lanes, and I still have an old Audi A4 Avant 1.9tdi for all the family
stuff, longer trips out and trips camping etc. It has a tow bar too
Hmmm, just need to sell all my stuff now to raise some money!
Golf Clubs, Snap On tool boxes, and an MX5 up for sale in next couple days!!!!!!!!!!
Had a 172, went pretty well and handled well too but it was the most unreliable car I’ve ever owned and it was a pain to work on with the cramped
engine bay.
Swapped it for a scoob, really fast in a straight line but it felt heavy in the corners – not as nimble as a good hot hatch and a bit unpredicatable
(will it understeer this time or oversteer?). Missis runs round in it now.
Best hatch I’ve owned was a 306 rallye, engine didn’t feel that torquey but when it was wound up it shifted (faster than the 172 imo) and the handling
was really sweet.
[Edited on 24/4/12 by jelly head]
It sounds like you want something Italian. No idea what's out there, but the engines are great. Useless post, I know.

Stick a supercharger on your MX5.

I would not touch a 172/182, because its French! I have owned an early 172, it was nippy, but unreliable. Electrics played up, seat seams splitting,
interior head lining falling out, that was a brand new car! and all that was before 1000 miles! After it blew second gear to bits after 7000 mile it
got traded! Maybe it was a Friday afternoon car?
I have also owned two scoobies and love them to bits, but fuel is a killer, even off boost they are real drinkers.
I love VAG cars, and either a Golf GTI 1.8T ot a Leon 1.8T with a remap is good fun and reasonably good on fuel (30mpg) off boost.

sooner!?
Sorry Steve
172/182s that have been looked after are brilliant, but most aren't and so you need to budget to have them tidied up. Certain jobs are specialists only, and even then some do jobs wrong. Seen so many with cam timing out as they people dong use the right tools.
Steve, try and find a decent 309GTi....if you can...I had one and i swear it was one of the best handling cars I have driven....could barrel into
corners at alarming speeds and still come out the other side alive...much more predictable than a 205....it was certainly more capable than my
'extraordinary' driving skills....felt really quick too, because of the lightweight sh*te French build quality of the
bodyshell....hailstones give them dents.....don't think they rust though, although I could be wrong there....
I would have another one in a minute if I could find a decent one....
Not bad on juice too, IIRC...
Rich.
A friend had a 309 (none GTi), and it put me off for life!
In fact, what put me on to VAG cars!
Anyway, what do you fellas and fella-ess' think of a Ford Focus ST170???

If not, how about an old Nissan Silvia? Such as a 200sx, which is both fast, and easily tuneable.
Admittedly though, i have no idea about the fuel economy/insurance.
Or, If you don't mind a bit of a project, an old Volvo 360 with a b230ft engine? Fast, small and chuckable?
And Wow i don't do much on here...
