I've noticed a lot of new cars are coming with the facility that turns the fog light on on the side you're turning towards. What the hell is that about? It's illegal to run with fogs when it's not foggy, and they still seem to come on at 20mph so people driving around roundabouts are dazzling the hell out of me regularly in the rain.

And what's with folk using fogs when it rains? What part of their brain doesn't engage and realise it doesn't help vision and it dazzles everyone else?

Mine does that - oldish model Mercedes E class. Actually it isn't the fog light, there's a separate bulb and reflector for the cornering light which is extremely helpful for junctions on unlit roads, especially if you can't use full beam.

Some later clios had a dedicated H7 bulb in the headlight that came on when cornering at slow speed or when stationery

Never noticed them until on the way home tonight. Wasn't dazeled by them though and front fogs should have a low flat beam anyway; They only dazzle because they aren't set right and it's not a test requirement.

I had a leaflet at work last week from Hella for aftermarket LED lamps that switched between DRL, fog light and turning lights, all with different beams and brightness.

Only noticed it tonight, checked on here and there is a post about it, very topical!!

I thought they were quite good. It means that even the plonkers that have lost their indicator stalk give some idea to where they are intending to go. Its kind of like a reminder that they may be going all the way round the round about spite the lack of indicator.

Is it a new EU thing like DRL?

My old MR2 turbo used to turn the front fogs with the steering. That was 24 years ago!

The low flat beam bounces off wet roads nicely! It might be a different bulb and reflector but it still is a pain. As with most modern light systems, they are really helpful to the vehicle owner but not everyone else. Same with hid lights and projector lights, fine if they are on a flat road aimed right, slightest undulation and you're repeatedly flashed by that sharp beam cutoff and left with no night vision. I'm getting sick of modern lighting innovations.

My wife's Range Rover sport does this and TBH, I quite like it as it lights the kerb your turning into on the dark country roads where we live!

Yes I can see the appeal with them. And dont have an issue.
What does bug me Poor usage of; main beams, indicators and rear fogs.

I've seen it loads, passats and Mercs etc especially. They are quite dull and have never dazzled me. It's been around for ages

Did TR7's (and others) not have headlights that turned in synchronisation to the steering. Now that was 30 or more years ago. What was wrong with that system for the up market brigade.

Not quite what the OP was on about but didn't the DS have moving headlights in the 1960's?

I've not noticed these other lights, but I don't have to commute so I try not to go out when it's busy.
