Don't forget that if you do have an accident, you'll have everything thrown at you for driving an overloaded vehicle. HGV drivers have
often lost their licences for this...
Oh - and your insurance company will probably disown you as well (not using the vehicle in manner for which it was designed, etc.)
Even if you don't have an accident and/or don't get caught, you'll rapidly trash your transmission and brakes. As Steve says,
driving a heavy trailer is a horrible experience - sod all brakes going downhill, and the car straining its guts out on the ups.
Know anyone with a LandRover, or other big heavy 4x4? Far better to enlist their help!

also bear in mind the news 2 days ago that 15,000 motorists went to prison last year.
As I said earlier, if the donor isnt that far away, just get a recovery truck to get it. 45 quid was worth it to save my license and 100's in
fines

No need!

Went to Le Mans last year in a narrow bodied westie, no "backup vehicle" - well worth it just for the fun, and I'd hate to be towing
something that I could drive...
Besides, it would cost so much more for the ferry...
