Spanish build? Need advice..

Chaps,

My brother back in Spain is considering building a Locost, Pinto as per the book.

1. Could you give me a rough list of the main donor parts / donor cars used? He needs to check that everything is either easy to find in Spain or small and light enough to have it sent from the UK. I've seen many posts from you guys about donor cars I had never heard of in Spain.

2. He has a place to build the car with basic tools, no crane to lift the engine, no Mig to put the chassis together, just a good size toolbox. Tasks requiring special tools like the ones mentioned he would have to arrange with garages / friends. How many of these big tasks come to your mind? We would like to figure out if he would need a trailer to carry the unfinished car many times or he would probably arrange for it to be moved for him a few times.

If he is still thinking about it after a couple of weeks, I'll buy him the Ron Champion book unless you have a better suggestion!

does the law in spain allow the build of kit cars? Some countries, like holland for example, have no process that allows a car to be type approved and registered.

We have SVA to make this possible, some countries have nothing which stops you completly

Hi Steve,

Yes we have the equivalent for the SVA in Spain, and I'm the proccess of finding out wether a Locost could be built for compliance. Hopefully, I will get good information on any areas of concern.

most of the components could be stuck in a van and onto the 24hr ferry to santander. so provided he can work out everything that he will get stuck on in advance, he could buy them in the UK. unless he want to get a fabrication company to build the chassis, he is better off buying a 'proper' one from mk/luego/st etc. maybe whichever is nearest to the south coast!

there is all the usual crap about engine height, so unless you find a suitable sierra equivilent it might be worth chucking the donor parts in the same van.

how about this: buy a uk sierra estate with a roof rack, fill it up with body work, stick the chassis on the roof, and drive it all to spain, then register it if required!

just watch out for the vehicle height with the chasiss on top - it might cost more on the ferry.

not read maths fingy cos i cant add up, but credit where credits due, its a top idea, buy a doner, fill it wi bits, drive it home n build it, may have been tounge in cheek at the time, but the best ideas often are...........

i've given up TBH, in the beginning, i was sure the thingy was wrong, now i know it was right. unfortunately, i then made exactly the same mistak e on the prision question. and theres nothing i hate more than making the same mistake twice...

shit happens though, at least i got there in the end!
