Rear Drums to Disks - Is it easy as swapping the hubs
My doner car had drums on the back and I want Disks all round
Can i just swap the rear hubs for disk hubs and get some calipers and disks?

Basically you just swap the fabricated rear uprights or just weld on flanges for the caliper as I did (made from 5mm angle section), might need a new
handbrake cable as I think the cable ends are different

On my Robinhood (which uses the sierra back trailing arms etc)
All I did was remove the disks, bolt on some adapter plates.. and bolt the calpipers inplace... new handbrake cable and pipework and bobs your
uncle....
Not sure where you get the adapter plates from mind you!

I have access to some rear hubs that take disks but wasnt sure that i could just straight swap incase drive shaft ends where different

na the shafts and hub flanges are the same for both
actually my job for tonight on the falcon and just ordered the disks and pads from Autosave when you reminded me
£43.85 which is not bad

daft question but which calipers can i use on the rear if i plan on fitting 13" wheels?

Remember that you may adversely alter the braking balance between front and rear.
You may need a means to remedy this such as a brake limiter fitted to the rear brakes if the rears are too keen.
Sierra calipers will go under 13" wheels OK.
A lot of RGB racers use them.

^ the pads are tiny though compared to the front, I'm not expecting much more braking, just less fade and better stopping in the wet

What about cossie rear calipers
will they fit?
i planned on fitting a brake bias valve once the IVA is done

not sure but there's 2 sizes, the 4x4 version has larger disks and may not fit in 13 inch rims
If you phoned up somewhere like autosave they'll tell you the different disk diameters, mines 253mm as was used up to the 2.0 engines

I did this and failed SVA twice on the front / rear brake ballance. It was over braked on the rear. (Fronts MUST lock up before the rears - as a
yardstick!)
If you put Discs on the rear, Make sure you have the 260mm (or larger discs on the front)
It may even be worth fitting the Focus 300mm discs and the adaptor plate on the front.
However they probably wont go under a 13" rim.
Not even sure about the 260mm ones either.
However, with drum rears you only get 240mm front discs.
260's are on 4x4 and later models with discs all round.

I will be using willwoods on the front (not sure on disk size)
i would imagine any 4 pot piston is going to lockup before the rear sierra disks

If you are ordering an MK chassis, it would be worth noting that the rear hub carriers used to be different depending on whether you were using discs
or drums.
Not sure what the difference was, or if they are still produced differently (it's 4 years since I ordered mine!).
Might be worth a call to MK to check.

Rear hub carrier bolt patter was turned 90 degs for discs.
You could just buy the caliper brakets that you can get on ebay for the drum to disc conversion but it will push your wheels 5 to 10mm further out.

I also did this and failed sva on brake balance between front and back.
I bought a brake bias valve and even had to drill and lock it with a split pin before I could pass.
But it was a pretty easy change over.

REAR DISKS
You can get a conversion kit from Rally Design
which includes both disks and hand brake callipers, they also make a bracket to convert your existing uprights, but you need to turn down the hub to
134mm diameter

OK i managed to get hold of some rear disc hubs (cost me £10)
however my problem now is I dont have any calipers, disks or most importantly caliper carrier brackets
I can get hold of the calipers pretty cheaply of ebay however the cheaper calipers dont come with carriers and i will still need to get them refurbed,
by the time ive bought all that and refurbed them i will be looking at the worse part of £250
for that sort of money does anyone know of a kit for rear disc hubs?

MNR sell the caliper brackets that bolt to the uprights.

This isn't a straight swap - the MK drum uprights foul the caliper in this conversion. Similarly if you swap to a disc upright it still fouls
and the bell depth on the disc is too deep.
I ended up using 2wd cossie discs and designed my own brackets to locate the caliper further away from the upright.
