Wanted: Sierra Donor Car Info
Hi,
From browsing the internet and this site I think we have decided that whatever kit we decide to build, the gearbox to use is the Type 9. It seems to
say that this will be found on models up to Dec 1988.
Does this mean anything later than F reg will not have the type 9 fitted?
Am I right in thinking the type 9 can be identified from having the "push down to get reverse" as opposed to an MT75 having a "lift
for reverse"?
Is there any other ways to identify the two, is the reverse in the same position on both boxes?
Also are there any models we should avoid or look for with regards to the best diff (or indeed any that have an unusable diff?).
Thanks in advance.

Reverse is left and forwards on the Type 9, right and back for the MT75. Sounds like you've done your homework on the dates pretty well anyway -
so with the above info you can rule out MT75 equipped borderline aged cars over the phone

I was under the impression that you will find 1.6 and 1.8 litre engines to have the type 9 gearbox. The 2 litre Pinto will also be type 9.
But when you go to the Double Over Head cam engie it will be MT75.
For example my 1991 1.8 Sierra was type 9.
Do you have a Sierra manual to refer to?

Look for a car with a pinto or cvh and you will find a T9 behind it.
The Dohc both carb and injection will have the mt75.
Ive never seen an Mt75 on anything elts and ive owned over a dozen

Hi,
MANY THANKS to you all for the above info. Much appreciated.
Will the diff off any of the above mentioned models also be suitable? Does all the above go for the Sapphire also?
Regarding the Sierra manual. I did have one in .pdf version, but it appears half of it is missing, I was going to get one off ebay

This may be a bit naughty so use at discretion.
Put this link into Google search bar http://www.fordsierra.uw.hu/
It then should come back with the first search return with a Translate this page.
Click on the translate bit and get a reasonable translation. Then click on the Do-it yourself in the left columm.
This then shows a few pdf's you can download for the Sierra.
Adrian
The Saffire is just a trim change in the Sierra, there were several engine versions.

Ford was very much a parts bin special sort of company and would stick in what ever come to hand.
There are people he say they have seen an mt75 on a cvh but I havnt.
Ive owned over a dozen and had bits from another fifty.
1.8cvh is an ideal donor if going zetec as you get the starter motor and other bits.

It sounds like I will have to be careful with what's kept and what's chucked.
We haven't really decided what to go with yet engine wise, but I would say it's between the 2.0 Zetec and the C20XE.

Hi,
May have sourced a 1.6 pinto. Does the above info still stand for the 1.6 model also?

Yes the above applies to the 1.6 pinto car as well.you can use the starter as well,
you just need a 14mm spacer between the bellhousing and starter.
I have one on mine with a type9 and 2.0 zetec and it works great.

Nothing wrong with it like you say. I have the mt75 in mine.
the 8v dohc is a bit pants compared with the others. 2.3 /rs hybrid would go well in 7 but the rebuild bits are so dear.

All 1.3,1.6,1.8 and non twincam 2.0 cars should have left the factory with a Type 9, as did all 2.8's and a handfull of 2.9's ( but they
were 4x4 )
2.0DOHC all had MT75 ( not including the T5 on Cosworths.)
Sapphire is the saloon version and is mechanical identical.
