What's a good deal?

I don't plan to start building for at least 3 months or so, but that gives me time to find bits for as cheap as possible, as I'm aiming for a very cheap build!

I'm going to build the car to Haynes book spec, but won't be using a sierra engine/box as I'm hoping to use something a bit more sprightly.

So I'm looking to source all the other sierra donor bits.

Question is.. what is a reasonable price to pay for a Sierra donor, and more importantly all the bits removed (I know I might be able to make some money back by selling off bits of Sierra but to be honest I'd rather pay a *small* premium to get all the bits stripped).

I'm after front uprights, brakes, rear hubs, rear brakes, handbrake, cable, driveshafts, propshaft, diff, loom, steering column, wheel, stalks, master cylinder, pedal box, and wheels.

I've found a package with disc rear brakes and a Granada LSD on ebay for £400. That seems high to me, but cheaper than most roadworthy donors go for (I don't have the means to trailer a donor back so would have to pay for that). Are the LSD's worth enough to command a reasonable premium? What about rear disc brakes?

I'm thinking of making an offer to see if I can get them cheaper.

But thought I'd check on here first in case somebody tells me that it's possible to get all the above bits for under a £100!

Cheers

I bought my running sierra doner last year for £50, then found £15 in change in the glove box! Sold unwanted bits, made about £300! Keep looking, they turn up when you're not expecting them. Ebay is not a great place to buy them now, people seem to have realised that we want them. Try your local free ads papers.

Cheers

If you want to save money then my advice would be to go with tried and proven solutions.

It might appear tempting to try to save a few quid doing it differently, but you will realise that the reason people do it the way they do is for a reason.

Actually if you want to save money then don't built it yourself, just buy one that someone else has. If you must build it yourself then take it all apart and then put it back together!

Cheers guys will keep looking!

What sort of premium does an LSD and rear discs command?

How much would it cost to get them separately if I were to end up with a drum-braked open diff donor?

Anybody know if granada diffs have the same output flange geometry as a sierra unit (i.e would it fit to the sierra driveshafts?)

Might stick a wanted ad in the village, never know what lurks in these farm barns!

Paid £175 for my doner, then sold the bits I didn't want on another forum and Ebay, made £225, so car cost me minus £50, Cheers Ray

To make a car go faster, just add lightness. Colin Chapman - OR - fit a bigger engine. Chippy

Granada has 5 stud hubs I believe.

And I think the front uprights are different from Sierra too.

There isn't a Sierra that has everything you want. None of the 2wd Sierra's have discs and LSD as far as I know.

The LSD are all from the 4x4 Sierra. Obviously this means you can't use the front uprights and gearbox.

All the best,
James

Cheers James for that..

I would be using everything Sierra (including rear discs) but just thought whether the Granada DIFF would bolt up to the sierra driveshafts?

I realise that there isn't a Sierra that's got everything in one package which is why I'm trying to get an idea of how much rear discs and an LSD would cost if I were to try and get them separately.
