It was probably broken before it left the production line.

I actually had a MK5 Escort with a 1600 Zetec motor, it was given it, thrashed it for 12 months, extensive Italian tune up , passed it on to someone else who drove it for 2 years and sold it. Not an exciting car to drive but never had any trouble in those 3 years. I did think about keeping the engine for the Locost as it was not that bad when given a few revs.
