MX5 transmission
For the MX5 knowledgeable people here. I have a 1.6 viscous diff at the moment, with driveshafts and propshaft to suit. I believe that to swap it out
for a 1.8 diff I would have to get the corresponding driveshafts and propshaft. But is it only the lengths of the shafts that cause the issue, or do
the 1.6 driveshafts and propshaft not even bolt to a 1.8?
If the lengths are different then it doesn't matter (I can just alter wishbone lengths to suit), if it doesn't even bolt up then I'm
screwed.

The 1.6 driveshafts are flanged and bolt to the diff whereas IIRC the 1.8's are splined and slide into the diff casing.
HTH.

The later 1.8's are complete driveshafts as you describe, but the earlier ones have a flange design similar to the 1.6. The top image on here
shows what I mean;

A bit further down is another couple of 1.8's, one from an auto. Both of those are also using stub shafts.

Early 1.6 shafts wont bolt to a 1.8 diff. As well as being different lengths the PCD is different.
Later 1.6's used the same diff as the 1.8 and had push in shafts, on those everything is interchangable.

That's the sort of info I was after, thanks.

Happy to help.
There's some more dimensions and photos about halfway down this page which gives a bit more details on the differences
