Q-plate vs Private plarte
Not really a donor car question but here goes.
I'm planning on building a Midlana so I was assuming I would end up with a Q-plate as I'm probably going to have to source bits from
various vehicles.
The question I have is; once I have the Q-plate can I subsequently have it re-registered with a private plate ?
Thanks
Ian

Hi,
If it has a 'Q' plate, you cannot change this, its fixed to the v5c forever.
Can you not build the car with new components and then have a recon engine, this will receive the current year reg?

No - once a Q plate always a Q plate.
If you want a private plate you would either have to go for a brand new registration or get an age related plate.
The age related plate would be non-transferable but you can replace it with a private reg plate.

I'm still undecided what to go for - I have a V5 from the donor and wouldn't get a new reg, but not bothered about any 'Q'
stigma at all.
So is there any advantage to a either?
Also - slightly OT - but ref the Midlana - why do cars with a rear engine get called 'Mid-engined'?
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure

You dont need much of a donor to retain the reg. What sources are used for the main parts of the car?
Mid engine name is based on the fact its between the axel, not behind..

Cheers Loggyboy - I think I am OK for an age related plate if I want one - the real question is why would I want one over a Q - or vice versa?
ETA: I've asked this question a few times and never got a definitive answer - I know a Q reg is fixed and an age related can be changed to a
private reg (of same or older age) - but are then any other reasons to go with one over the other?
I am talking about MOT emissions as an example - I hear about 'visible smoke' only for Q's - but if my reg is 'E' and
the engine is 1992 what then?

Apologies for a slight hijack here but I have a related question which I'd love some advice on...
There is an old vw 412 (google it!) near me lying in a field. The floor is completely gone and I am thinking of building a box section chassis
underneath it and bolting the remains of the shell on top. Obviously it will require an IVA test but I just wondered if there was any way of retaining
the vehicles original reg or is it straight to Q plate? The reg isnt valuable but I'd love to retain the car's original identity if
possible.
Thanks
Chris

Doubt you could tbh, to retain reg/identity it would need to be a 'rebuilt vehicle'. but without a new oe replacement Shell it would be a
Q. You could try as a kit built vehicle, with a new built chassis and if you kept the majority of other original parts you would retain the age of the
'donor' but reg would be replaced, as would the original identity.
If it were me I would repair the chassis using as much as original as possible, making minor alterations to keepvit strong, then leave it exactly as
itvis registration wise.

Cheers Loggy,
Just as I feared really but no complaints, IVA is here to protect us all. The body is way past sensible repair hence the idea of making a new chassis
for it. Guess it's a Q plate or maybe just keep it for the drag strip!
Thanks again

Completely wrong.
I IVA'ed my Countach which has a new body, chassis but used the axle and gearbox from a renault 21 turbo and I retained its reg

It retained the exact reg of its donor?
It shouldnt have, both routes for altered/rebuilt vehicles require a new or original shell/chassis, to retain the exact reg.

Of course not. I got an age related plate the same year as the donor. Then out my private plate on it
