engine gearbox combination
I want to build a Locost with the original escort gearbox and dif, but I would like to put in a newer engine. Like the Opel Astra 1600cc or 2000cc.
What are the potential problems, and what other engine should I consider. I don’t want massive power but rather reliability and be economical.

I'm sure you'll get a few suggestions shortly.
Personally I use the Toyota 4AGE 1600cc which you can buy from RAW Engineering as an engine plus fitting kit or supply your own engine.
My preference is for the import 20V engines as they come with throttle bodies from the factory.
4AGE 16V phase III - 130BHP £350-450
4AGE 20V silvertop - 142BHP £650
4AGE 20V blacktop - 150BHP £750
Those prices are approx for the engine only. You could of course get a UK 16V from the scrappy.

Very tasty
But a Ford engine will bolt up easier and cheaper..Depends how much you want to spend...
ie 1.8 zetec on twin 45's or the like and a good exhaust will give you 150ish bhp .Its a well proven instalation and bolts up to your box with
out an expensive bell housing...

Building something similar, original escort box and a 1.8 Zetec with megasquirt (yet to run)
Get an spigot bearing for the zetec, change the clutch disk center (different number of splines) and go.
