Sierra VIN plate Diff codes
Does anyone know where I can find out the codes used on the Sierra
VIN plate ('trans' section) to identify the diff ratio fitted to the
car?
Cheers

Every number and letter in your Vehicle Identification Number ( V.I.N.) provides you with information on the production of your car ( such as where
it was made, when it was made, body type etc). The information on this page only applies to Ford cars produced in Europe unfortunately.
Positions on the V,I.N. plate
Position 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier
Position 4+10: Body Type
Position 5-6: XX
Position 7: Line
Position 8: Assembly Plant
Position 9: Model
Position 11: Year
Position 12: Month
Position 13-17: Production Sequence Number
What it all means
WORLD MANUFACTURER IDENTIFIER (position 1-3)
SFA = Ford Motor Company Ltd. (England)
TW2 = Ford Lutisania sarl (Portugal)
UNI = Henry Ford and Son Ltd. (Ireland)
VS6 = Ford Espana sa (Spain)
WF0 = Ford Werke A.G. (Germany)
WF1 = Ford Werke A.G. (Germany)
XLC = Ford Nederland NV (Netherlands)
BODY TYPE (position 4+10)
3 = van high roof
5 = combi high roof
A = 5-door
B = 3-door
F = 4-door
N = 5-door estate/wagon
P = single cab pick-up
LINE (position 7)
B = Ford Great Britain (own assembly)
C = Ford Great Britain (assembly by affiliate)
E = Ford Germany (assembly by affiliate)
G = Ford Germany (own assembly)
L = Ford Brazil (own assembly)
W = Ford Spain (own assembly)
ASSEMBLY PLANT (position 8)
A = Dagenham - Cologne - Ipiranga
B = Halewood - Genk - Sao Bernado
C = Langley - Saarlouis
K = Rheine
N = Amsterdam
P = Valencia - Azambuja
S = Setubal
MODEL (position 9)
A = Escort
B = Mondeo - Cougar
D = Focus
E = Puma
F = Fiesta
G = Scorpio
J = Fiesta
R = Ka
W = Galaxy
YEAR (position 11)
different for each model
MONTH (position 12)
different for each model
PRODUCTION SEQUENCE NUMBER (position 13-17)
counts from 10001 to 59999
does that help.
google is a wonderful thing (take note Mr Viper!)

Steve
Thanks for the reply, but I was looking specifically for the descriptions of the codes used to describe what diff ratio is fitted rather than the VI
Number itself.
This code is stamped on the plate below the VIN. I think it is usually labelled 'trans'.

Steve's definition is that Brazil is now in Europe.
